Pleasantly surprised!

I took my 7 month old pup for her last set of shots and a rabies shot. I usually buy my shots from our druggist and give my own, but since you can't get your own rabies shot, I took her in to the vet. I hadn't been to a vet for a long time and was thinking the 2 shots and a deworming would be around $40 but it came to $22. I paid $7 for shot from druggist and the vet only charged $10, the rabies was $7 and the wormer $5. Is this in line with what other areas of the country charge?

Lucky you Rita! The closest dog/cat vet charges $47 just to walk in the door. He drops it to $42 each if you bring him 2 animals at once. He has expanded his practice and now has 4 vets plus himself working there, but so many techs that they're tripping over each other. I usually try to have my farm vet (much more reasonable even with a house call) take care of the dogs & cats but sometimes....

It's in line with what our vet charges but some vets here have started charging an "office fee" - just like medical doctors. $25 - $30 plus the charge for the shots or any procedures.

I was shipping an animal and needed a health certificate- to get one, basically the vet looks over the animal and signs off that it appears healthy....

$52!

The friend I was sending it off for was astounded. The most she had ever paid for one was $17. I'm in a small town, and there is no competition.

The nearest larger town has several vets, so the prices are marginally better. Parvo treatment on a dog runs $300 to $1500, depending on the vet. There is one vet, about 1.5 hours away that charges $75 for the same treatment.

Vets are one of those things that it pays to call around and ask before you go in.

All the vets around here charge an office fee, usually $30. It's $15-$20 per shot, and they won't sell you worm medication without doing a fecal, which is $10.

That same visit would have cost me around $80.

Well if I let a vet do just the puppy vaccine its 35 for office visit and 20 for the 7in1 vaccine. If I do it myself, its 5 dollars! So, I do that myself. I worm them myself too and do my own heartworm prevent as thats really outrageously priced.
Only rabies I have to go to the vet, state law, and thats 15 bucks plus that office visit and more animals doesnt change the cost. No matter what, each animal is a separate bill. So each rabies vaccine is 50 bucks.

I am getting all 4 of our dogs spayed and neutered this year and thats going to be rough since they charge by breed. I have all large breed dogs so 150 for a neuter and 200 for a spay.

Oh and this is the cheapest vet in a 25 mile radius of us. Others are more.

Our vet charges $39, then he looks at the animals. Everything else is additional.

Well, it certainly seems like my vet is very reasonable!! Hope she doesn't ever start with the up-front office charge like some of you have to pay. She charges $100 for spaying so she charges about the same for that as River Pines mentioned, as my pup is smaller and I think they charge less for small dogs.

Very good pricing but not anything like what we pay. The vets here charge a basic fee for just stepping in the door. For instance to get the first set of shots cost us $52 for the vet fee plus the cost of the vaccine. The next visit for the next set of shots cost us $38 (vet fee for follow up visit) plus the cost of the vaccine. The vaccines and wormer and basic vaccines were not expensive it is the vet fee that costs. Bordetella is an intra-nasal vaccine and quite expensive. We could have gotten it from a pharmacy at half the price and administered it ourselves but we have gone down that road before and all it takes is the flick of a stubborn head and flapping ears to waste the entire vaccine.
