Bale spike on Allis tractor
We got a bale spike for our Allis D17 and I have no clue how to put it on. OK, I have an idea, but I don't know how well it will work. The Allis uses a snap coupler, and we have a 3 point converter. It also has it's own sort of three point system; it has two hydraulic arms that raise and lower a short distance.
Well, this bale spike is weird. I don't know all the hitch types, but the only thing that describes this is "4 point" and I don't know of any such hitch. Basically, it has 4 sets of holes for a hitch on the back, in a square pattern.
Well, since it needs a 4 point setup, I'm going to use the Allis' 2 points of it's 3 point hitch, and put the other 3 point adapter in the coupler. Then I will have 4 points. Mm... Maybe I should just go take some pictures.
Anyways, I'm wondering if this will work, and if you have any experience with Allis bale spikes...

From your description I believe this is a bale spike for a front end loader.

I`m not sure till I see pictures, but one of my spears will fit either front end loader or rear three point. And I have one that fits on my skid loader, that is all it fits. So try and get some pics first, before we make a comment. > thanks Marc

I agree though some bale spikes can be adapted to loader or 3pt use.
For rear use I prefer one that looks like this:
This is usually referred to as a bale carrier rather than bale spike. Though one I liked had a small spike up from the carrier arms in order to stabilize the bale so it doesnt roll off. Oh and you will need some weight on front of tractor. Either regular front end weights or some rocks in a loader or whatever.
Now on a big tractor with front loader the spike is fine, but I think the carrier is more stable than spike, if you are mounting it on rear of a small tractor. Each to their own.
Probably on smaller tractors the most stable bale moving is using one of these which could be used with pickup or antique tractor:
Slower but safer and you can pull one of these down highway with jeep or small pickup or large pickup if thats what you have. I've used one. Works. Definitely way to go if you are only dealing with few bales and only have smaller tractor.

Yes, it sounds like this is what you have. Made to fit in place of the bucket.

Without a pic I could be mistaken but it sounds like a bale lift with the hydraulic cylinders you referenced. I have seen these for attaching on the rear of tractors and the hydraulics give an additional lift height so that the hay can be stacked or loaded onto a trailer or into a feed rack that is taller than the tractor lift can achieve.

I had a D17. I took the most of the... wow this is hard to decribe.... The tractor came with adjustable bars that hang down from the lift arms. I took the pull arms, and the 3rd link from my john deere 720 3 point hitch, put them on my D19. It worked perrfectly.

A great place to figure out what you need is:
http://allischalmers.com
Click thru to the new forum...if those guys can't help...it probably can't be done on an Allis.

Hi,
On your D17, did the hydraulic arms on the back raise and lower when you wanted them to? The three-point arms on our Allis, they don't work right now. I know they do, but not anymore.

I'd love to see pics as well.
'four point' often means bolts onto the rear axle when discussing backhoes and other special equipment.
I too thought of a loader attachment from your description as others have.
Now - if your AC tractor does not have a working snap coupler setup - you said the arms don't work any more - and you don't really have a 3pt conversion on it - I think you said you don't - then what is working on this tractor to atach things to?
I'd really like to see pics.
Edit: Ok, you said you do have a 3pt conversion, but then you said there are extra short arms going somewhere - did you mean those are on the bale spike you bought? Or on the tractor? I got a little confused....
