my new dog..maybe

May have a new dog...

I haven't had a dog since I had my dog put to sleep this summer. A friend found a beautiful dog a few days ago and has not been able to find an owner.
I am going to look at it tomorrow. If I get him I will have to carefully see how he is with cats..He is unneutered and looks like some type of boxer/lab mix..

I will try to add a picture on here. He has wounds on both his legs near the dew claws..Wondering what would do that on each side. I am thinking lick wounds since they are the same on both sides.

my new dog..maybe - Homesteading Questions

That looks like a yellow dog. I can see the lab, maybe some shepherd in the face, but he is very pretty. I hope he works for you.

If he has lick wounds, it might be his diet. I'm sure you'll fix him so he won't want to stray so much and you may consider a grainless or raw diet.

The more I look at him and pictures of Boxer/Labs online the more i think I will stick to my original guess ...Has to a mix with something with a wide head.

I would definitely neuter him first thing...

Do call around to any dog catchers or shelters, in case someone is looking for him. I'm ready for a new dog, too, but difficult family complications keep taking priority.

Just going by the picture, and there's only one so there is lots of room for error... but I see sharpei or maybe chow in the face... either way it looks like a breed that may be prone to being entropic. I'd be curious to get a better look at those eyes.

The ears are tight to the head. jaws wide. I agree, shar pei. maybe some Carolina dog in there too.

i'm going to disagree. he looks nearly identical to a few boxerXlabs i've seen that were KNOWN crosses. so that guess is as good as any other.
OTH have seen a more red colored boxerXlab that was identical to my red catahoulaX american bulldog (many people thought they were littermates). have also seen a ridgebackXbullmastiff, redboneXpit, beagleXpit & blackmouth curXpit that all looked identical to my old red dog.
ETA labs as SUPPOSED to have blocky heads a lot of the junk people call labs are mutts w/ papers hung on them.

I agree pops2, good labs have block heads but the ears on both lab and boxers are not that high set and tight.

Entropic is when the eyelids roll inward into the eye, poking the lashes into the eyeball... Sharpeis, Rotts and such breeds have known issues. usually in purebreds the eye lids are 'tacked up' with a stitch to prevent them from turning inward.

I also think Shar Pei and something else. The fat, rounded lips and ears (and coloring) are all very Shar Pei. Something about him is very Spitzy to me... Shiba Inu-ish. But that could also just be the Shar Pei coming through... That Asian dog look. He's really cute though! I hope he works out for you!

I have a guess or two, but what does it matter, really?

If you are ready for another dog, God will hand him/her to you. You will love and need each other and it will be wonderful, and you will spend many, many years together. And they lived happily ever after. :-)

He looks like Old Yeller. I'm guessing just long and proud lines of mutt.

If it were me, I'd take him to the Vet and have him Checked for a Chip, before I'd really Claim him. I'd just want to be sure he is Alright to Claim. He might belong to a family with 2 or 3 little Kids that need a dog. ETA.... They might be crying & praying to find their Dear Yeller Dog.
But, that's just what I'd do.....Just saying........

The basic shape of his head and body say asian decent. Especially noticing his white undercolor.

on the other hand, though, he could be your run of the mill pitbull mutt. Lots of pitbulls in the carolina mountains. Have you tested him around cats yet?

[FONT="Century Gothic"][SIZE="3"]From the looks of him I'd have to agree with Shar Pei mix. Probably a good idea to be very careful about introducing to livestock/cats/chickens - and small children!

I agree with Old John - in my over 50 years of being "found" by critters of every stripe I've found that technology has become my friend. Immediately after securing said critter in truck, I take a picture with my cell phone, call my vet and forward pic, and head on down to vet office to check for chip. It has happened that by the time I get there, the owner has already called - or the vet recognized the animal and called the owner. I LOVE happy reunions!

If there's no chip or owner to be found I have the vet do vacs and heartworm check, post to Craigslist, put ad in newspaper, and pray while securing animal in quarantine kennel with food and water. All this before the sun sets on the first day. If no owner comes forward in 10 days, the critter gets a personalized collar, tags, name, and individual introduction to the pack (who've been checking out the newbie through the double chain link and know more about newbie than I ever will). No critter has ever shown a desire to escape from our Earthly Paradise - too much to do here, good friends, good food, and a six-foot board/wire and electrified fence takes care of the curious LOL

HilltopDaisy, I love your attitude

Ya'll please excuse my verbosity this am. This is only my third post, I'm so happy to finally be able to communicate with everyone. Hope I didn't put anyone to sleep. I'm off to church now. Good luck with the pooch!

In His Love
Mich
