Starting a pellet stove?

We have two woodstoves that we've used for many years for heat in our house and shop. We use either homemade fire starters or the commercial wax/sawdust type to light the fire in the stove.

Never really looked at a pellet stove up close and personal and was curious how one lights the fire in a pellet stove? Do people use the same type of fire starters?

Our old pellet stove, we had to clean out the pot, manually put in some pellets, add some starter gel, light then turn it on.

The new one, we push a button

I just use a small piece of starter cube with pellets piled under it, easy to light. I've had this pellet stove for about 10 yrs now, has worked fine, just pulled it apart today for it;s yearly cleaning and burning tonight. Its a Whitfield. Use 3/4 of a pallet of pellets a yr.

Question, off-thread somewhat. Can you feed a pellet stove with wood and branches that have been through a chipper - the sort that's normally used to make wood mulch?

I think it would gum up in the auger feeder.

My pellet stove has an electronis ignightor & lights it's self, cleans the firepot by itself & we dump the ash pan every few days. I do clean the inside of the stove once a month where all the ash, & cast iron firewall, etc. is.

Ours is also hooked to a thermostat & kicks on & off according to the temp I have it set for. We love our pellet stove. Heats our house with a nice warm heat. Unlike our forced air propane furnace which is a much colder heat set at the same thermostat temp.
