I love my Leatherman tool.............

When the first Leatherman tool came out, I dissed it, thinking it was a cheap toy, worthy of my uneducated condemnation. Then my father let me try his, and I wouldn't give it back... I've had four over the years... I've sent two back, because I broke em, and they replaced them without cost.

Lost my super tool in the summer, went back five minutes later, to the area it 'disappeared' and someone had snatched it up. Picked up a 'Wave' the next day... I couldn't sleep knowing I was 'un-Leatherman'd'.

Cool little tool, but the new sheath was terrible... turn upside down, [and who among us doesn't get upside down (literally) a couple times a day] and the tool would slip out. It got to where everytime I went outside, I'd be slapping my hip to make sure it was there when I got up from whatever I was doing.

Contacted Leatherman customer service last week, explaining the situation. Got an email back, wanting further info... chatted with a design rep, and they sent a prototype sheath, express mail, for free... WOOHOO!!!

GF saw it, and said "made in China".... whatttttt? Nope... no MiChina stamp/label.

Makes me want to go out and buy two or three more, to keep in my emergency kits.

Did I mention, I love my Leatherman!

I worked down there at Leatherman for awhile a few years back. Decent place to work, they are DETERMINED to stay in the US. I really liked that. The return policy is great too. You can't believe the tools that came through. There's one in a display case that was 'blowed up' in Iraq. Still worked, but the outside showed some wear... if I might understate it.

I love my Leatherman too. For working there I got one of everything they make, laser engraved with my name. Being as I'm so close I even go down and have mine sharpened once in awhile. Mostly to visit friends though.

ETA: My personal favorite is the Charge. I like the size and the needle nose.

Years ago I poo poo'd the Leatherman too. I thought it was just a gadget toy for big boys. Then dh got one for me. I immediately found all sorts of uses for it. I never wore it on my belt because I don't wear belts, but I kept it in my purse and found all sorts of uses for it. It's amazing how many times you need to cut, measure, disassemble, clip, unscrew, or otherwise manipulate things with a small tool when you're out and around. I even have a tiny keychain model that I've used at flea markets and junk shops to tinker with old Singer sewing machines before buying, to see if all parts are intact. My dh wears his on his belt.

Two weekends ago me and a buddy stopped at a yardsale and they had a knife collection they were selling. Several different Leatherman tools for sale, my buddy bought one for $20. I passed on them because I wasn't sure of them. I think I screwed up...

I have 2. I keep a small one in my purse, and it's funny when a coworker looks at me and says "You can fix this, can't you?". Sure can! Then I have a bigger one that I keep on me here at home. Great tools!

DH had his sheath break, so we had go to Cabela's to get a new one. He wasn't overly impressed with what he got, but it is leather and will work. DH does not end up upside down all that often, and it's almost always at home so we can find what he dropped. Usually he loses stuff out of his front shirt pockets, if they don't have buttons on them.

A few years ago he lost his older leatherman (he has 2-3 of them) and he was sure it was out near the hay feeder in the pasture. He even took the metal detector out a few times but could not find it.

And about a year later, I was cleaning out some stuff under the basement steps, old paint cans and things you shove under there that you probably should toss as you don't really intend to use them again . . .

And back in the corner, I found his leatherman. I figure he had set it at the top of the steps for some reason - probably doing something in the laundry room. And the cats came by and knocked it down. DH then went out and did some work in the pasture, and when he came back in he noticed it was gone. He knew he'd had it right before he went outside, so assumed it was outside he lost it.

BTW - I have one of those little ones in my purse too, along with a small tape measure - never know when you may need it.

Around here in SD, we see a lot more people carrying plyers than leatherman tools. Go to any farm auction and half the guys wondering around will have a nice sized plyers on their belt.

My Leatherman came in one o' those silly open top leather scabbards, too. I did a little searching and found that I could buy a nylon canvas sheath with a velcro closure flap from Leatherman. The tool has been carried in that canvas sheath ever since. No way will my Leatherman fall out of this sheath.

I do wish they'd make a Leatherman with both a pliers and a crescent wrench.

After fifteen years (and frequent use) I finally broke my original Leatherman PST and had to replace it. I carry the Leatherman Fuse now. Except for the tool lock I don't care as much for it as I did my original, but it still gets the job done. The only time I don't carry it (along with a Mini-Mag flashlight) is when I'm someplace where I'm forced to go without such as courthouses and airports.

Of course it's not as good as a purpose made tool, but it's always on me whereas my toolbox with all of those purpose made tools are often not available when I need them.

I always hated the original Leatheman design. I use the knife a lot, and I hated that you had to open it up to extract it, and then it didn't lock. The S.O.G. I had was decent, as were a few others. The Leatherman Wave, however, is just about perfect. Knives on the outside, and they lock securely. One hand extraction is possible. Great warranty and service, even if the sheath is a throwaway.

I use mine every single day. Just like my keys and wallet, its always with me.

Leatherman Wave, keep one on me, and a spare at home.

A friend called me once to take a jeep he was looking to purchase out for a test spin. We went down a forest road, and had to use the little saw to cut a path through a fallen tree to get back out. Not to mention, had to put one of the mufflers back on, bolt the battery back in place, tighten a few other parts, reattach a leaf spring to an extended hangar, and tighten the seat up - After that, I will never be without one. I was amazed at what one can do, when pressed, with those little buggers.

Alan, I think they still repair/replace broken tools...

I've also been seeing adverts lately for a TSA approved Leatherman... a keychain type tool, but has all the necessities. IF I flew, I'd have to pick one of those babies up. I do feel, in a worst case scenario (flying) that if I had my regular tool, I could make do... and do well... take it away, and I'm just another stranded passenger on a deserted isle.

I <3 my Leatherman. Which reminds me I took it out of my purse when I flew recently and still haven't put it back in! I don't use it a lot... but when I do its PERFECT!!!!

Last fall I used mine to saw a giant pumpkin in half that I couldn't pick up when it was whole. It was pretty messy, but worked like a charm.

-I never had a Leatherman.. Used to have a Gerber Multi-Plier and it was great until the plier jaws snapped off right above the pivot. It was the regular blunt nose pliers, not the needle nose ones. Also before the black slide locks on the handles. Now I have a Bear Super Bear Jaws multi-tool that I've had now for about 5 years or so without any issues.

My wife and I fish a lot. I got her a Leatherman for Christmas a few years ago with her name engraved on it. She said it was the best present she ever got!
