Snooping at other's Homesteads?
When you go to visit someone at their Homestead - not family and not "best friends" but still - friends. Do you do any "snooping"?
Not in a mean way and not to specifically "find" anything - just normal curious snooping.
For example: When you go to the bathroom, do you look in their medicine cabinet or in the bathroom closet?
Do you look behind the shower curtain to see what you can see?
And, would you state if you are male or female? My husband and I have a different opinion on this topic and since friends are coming to visit tonight, I am curious as to the responses.
Thank you -
PS Yes, after a few replies here then I will say what my response is and what my husband's is.

Nope, that wouldn't be polite and I sure wouldn't want someone snooping around my home!

Absolutely NO. Extremely rude, shows lack of manners for sure. Now if you asked about checking out the barn...

Holy cow! Absolutely not!
It makes no difference whether you are male or female. Not done.
I might ask to be shown around to see their veggie garden set-up and livestock, but that would be with permission.

Snoop - no way! I would be embarrassed and appalled - and that would be if I was the one doing the snooping! LOL
Now - I would certainly be interested in checking out the garden, the barn, and asking things like "why do you it this way?" or wanting to know which veggies did better this year etc.
PS: Female

Nope. Oddly enough, the unwritten rules around this area is you don't even USE a bathroom as a guest except sometimes when invited to dinner.

Totally beyond nosy! Wow, can't believe folks would even ASK about such rudeness!!
I do remember an Ann Landers or Dear Abby letter about someone who loaded their medicine cabinet with marbles, "just to see if anyone snoops". The prying person got them dropped ALL OVER with the resulting crash bringing EVERYONE to the bathroom door!! How does the snoop explain that?!
I would clean out my medicine cabinet before visitors, lots of drug thefts by the NICEST folks. Both kids friends and older folks, might steal and resell or use them recreationally.
It is like NOTHING is sacred anymore, people wanting to know EVERY detail of your life! Used to be you worried if there was some dust or a cobweb, but the folks you describe are way beyond that! Sounds more like they are casing the place to give details for theft or cut you down to everyone they talk to.
You MIGHT want to invest in a deadbolt for your bedroom, to keep them out of your private things and jewelry!! Totally none of their business, so better safe than sorry.
I don't think I would have such people over, if I thought they would snoop like this. YUCKK Female here.

No, it is in very bad form to go snooping through someone's medicine cabinet. Even if you need an aspirin, or a feminine hygiene item, whatever, you should just ask the host/hostess.
If they closed their shower curtain, assume they had a reason! Much as I might like to check out their tile job, it is disprespectful to them for me to look in there after they intentionally closed it off.
Outside is a different story. The garden and usually the animals are out in plain sight, so if a visitor wanders over closer to them for a look, I don't think of it as "out of bounds". Now if they go inside our garage, sheds, barn, without being accompanied or invited, that is out of bounds to me.
That is from the female perspective.

Female and no I wouldn't... I don't really like to go to the bathroom at "just friends" house anyways (maybe its because I live in ^^Harry's area and didn't know the rule just felt it)... I would be afraid something might fall out of the cabinet b/c they have it rigged that way so they know if you were snooping. If it is on the counter it is fair game, like lotion or something I might open up and smell it, but that is about it.
Now on the rare occassions I am at the doctor's office and they leave me in that lil room FOREVER... yeah, I snoop, hundred year old germ laced magazines don't hold my attention long.

No!!!! Male here. IF....I ever use a bathroom, just do my buisness and get out. No problem here, no medicine cabinet, no shower curtain. Everything is in a wardrobe and behind closet doors in the dressing area....James

Years ago I worked with a woman who was talking about "so and so's house" and what she saw in her medicine cabinet while she was there, etc. She had absolutely no idea, or didn't care that she was totally off the wall. I told her that she would never be allowed in my house, ever. I've known her for 30+ years and she's never gotten past my yard.
Some people are just bizarre!
I'm female and wouldn't care if a guest used my bathroom (except the above mentioned snoop).

Never. No way, no how. I know my wife wouldn't, either.

I treat other's homes as I'd hope they would treat mine. I don't snoop in either family or friend's homes.

Nobody I know has a medicine cabinet nailed up behind a tree in the back yard. Yet.

The only reason I might be curious to look inside a drawer was to see how it was constructed, but I'd for sure ASK the owner to show me! If it's closed or covered up, I wouldn't look without permission. I won't go into an animal's area without permission either.
Though I've yet to find a homesteading type that wasn't happy to show me all the nooks and crannies. But then they are usually asking how to fix a problem or move a wall, or build a pen . . .

Well, I'd certainly know if you ventured uninvited into my bucks' pen!
