He's in a trap. Trying to figure out how to get it out. DH got a tarp and I told him I'd cover the trap but I'm scared of it spraying all our hay. We have a whole season's hay in the barn.

You should be able to walk up slowly making light noises and lay the tarp over the trap. Pick the trap up and take the skunk swimming. Easiest and least aromatic method! No matter where you shoot it will stink.
