I have used a few twist-off bottles for homebrew, with crown caps without a problem.
The crown cap crimps on the threads just fine. I've never lost any homebrew because of using them. Not even one. I don't use many threaded bottles. I've heard a couple guys say they would nopt seal well. But I never had a problem. I have enough without them, so I don't use 'em now very often.
I have 20 cases of recycled bottles of various kinds, that I like to keep full. I make a half dozen 5 gallon batches of homebrew each year, mostly beer, but a couple batches of Mead. I put all the Mead in Champagne bottles, mostly bought new. They take regular crown caps too. They are made of well-tempered glass, very strong.
On the Other Hand.... I have used some clear glass "Crush" bottles, from orange soda, and I had Problems...Big Time. Do Not Use them for Homebrew. The orange crush bottles did not hold the pressure well.
One Saturday morning, before I left for work, I was putting some homebrew in the fridge, expecting company visiting that evening. As I was carrying two or three bottles in each hand, the neck of one bottle sheared off, leaving a sharp, knife-like edge that deeply sliced my second finger. So, I went to the ER for a couple hours, that morning instead of work. I only lost an hour or two of overtime but........
We had another of the crush bottles shear off like that as we were opening it. But, by then we were wrapping them in a towel, for Safety. After that I never used, another "Crush" bottle.
Correction "They are great for soda........ I only use recycled Beer bottles, for beer."
