We're looking in the Houston area ourselves TNH...used to drive through there a lot to go to Springfield/Branson...it's close to Fort Leonardwood without being right in it, perfect for us. You're safe with hunting for hills, that's for sure!

If you are financially stable, would be great place to live. Not much for jobs outlook though. Timber Industry is picking up some, but not like it was 3 or 4 years ago.

For us "old folks" it's affordable, as long as you don't NEED a job. Should be able to get by, if you're very frugal.

How is the ground for gardening?? I was told by one that its raised beds only. Im looking at a plot with a 150ft elevation change in 660 ft with lots of woods.

I guess I would ask what kind of wood is primary there??
Does it freeze deep?
Pole barns work?? There are no restrictions on this place

No restrictions = GOOD! The soil in these parts is quite thin and rocky. Main crops are hay, cattle and ticks. If you can deal with all that. . .. Raised beds is the way to go for gardening.

Lots of Black Walnut, White Oak, Red Oak, Cedar and Pine. Lots of pole barns in these parts.

I had water line run to the barn, with a 2-ft trench. I think the frost line is 18". If you have a favorite weather site, type in the zip for the area you're interested in to get a good idea. We seem to get more ice than snow.

Hope this was helpful.

Saffron Mountain?? It's beautiful there & your woodworking would probably fetch a nice income especially if you hooked into the Ozarks made crafts market

Top soil is maybe an inch, then rock and clay. Plan on building up your soil for a garden area, or have black dirt hauled in. If you need a well dug, expect a min. of 350 to 375 Ft.
As far as ticks go... Treat your dogs and cats, spray down with a good deet product if you go into the woods. Chickens in the yard keeps most bugs at bay.

Ticks? I don't even know what their purpose on earth is, besides aggravating and annoying every living thing they touch! Free-range chickens and guineas help a lot.

It might not be much consolation but the variety of tick we have around Ava is called the Lone Star Tick and they don't carry Lyme disease.

Guineas will make serious inroads on the tick population.

I have looked at property in the area and think it's gorgeous. You can get remote in a hurry so it kind of depends on your life style as to whether it works for you or not.

If I buy this place its pretty much Virign. SO I suppose that means ticks galore. I hate to think everything could be great and these things keep me from buying it. The first thing that has to be done is start cutting firewood or clearing for a drive and such. then clear for a building spot. Maybe I should move in the winter. Wasn't going to. When do the ticks come out. LOL

Here's some interesting political information about Shannon County; Eminence is the county seat.

Politics at the local level in Shannon County is predominantly controlled by the Democratic Party. In fact, all but two of Shannon County's elected officeholders are Democrats.

After the first freeze, it should be okay, tick-wise.
