AKKK !!! My FIL has a guy coming tomorrow am to spray the roof with a chemical to prevent moss from accumulating for 2 years .... the guy says the chemical is BIO GAURD , but I cant find it when I google !!! I dont want the rain to wash it off and it getting into the soil ....the fish pond ....or the chickens to drink it !!!!

I found it as a pool algae control chemical.

My MIL sprinkles Tide detergent on the peak of the roof every fall for moss eradication and swears by it. She actually climbs her little self up there to do it, too!

A solution of bleach, water and a squirt of dishwashing detergent should kill the algae and any mold the roof has. Use a garden sprayer and spray it on until soaked. Start at the bottom of the roof and work up. This will kill the existing stuff but will not prevent new growth.

To prevent new growth, nail some galvanized metal strips under the highest row of shingles such that an inch or two of metal is exposed on the roof. Rainfall will leach enough zinc from the metal to then prevent any further growth. If you want proof of this, just look at any old roof that has galvanized flashing around the pipes that exit the roof . There will no growth downgradient of the galvanized flashing.

The worst thing about bleach is it dries out the oily substance that hold the grit on the shingle, so the grit falls off, also makes the shingles hard and brittle. Tide seems to do minimal damage. I do it in the spring after the heavy rains have passed, needs enough moisture to wet it tho. Kills the roots and the residual keeps it from growing, needs done each year to kill new spores. We have a lot of rain in Oregon and lots of moss....James

What CF says about a galvanized strip. A lot of the old barns around here actually have a galvanized ridge cap and it does work!
