And the Jellystone dead guy 'asked for it'. IF YOU RUN, you will be caught, and "KILLED". If you stand your ground, and 'play dead', if attacked, the bear will "kill" you, and then leave you alone... when the threat is gone, it'll leave you alone.

I must have given the 'bear talk' at least ten thousand times (literally... I can do it in my sleep... sometimes, after a long day 'educating' visitors about griz behavior, I'd find my mind going on vacation back to the homestead, wondering how my orchard was doing). If you did what I told you, you'd have zero problems with bears. If you didn't, you'd get chewed on. Reckon my demeanor 'stuck' and folks stayed safe.

I have to disagree with the comment above. I would like to remind folks that bears dont read the "rules", and tend to do whatever they want, whenever they want. I agree that the guy in the park did something stupid, and likely brought on the attack, tho the info I heard wasnt exactly positive what had happened, so they are best guessing. However, when we try to say bears will do such and such, we are setting ourselves up. The guy in the tent that was killed and eaten last summer by a sow grizzly and cubs didn't "ask for it", he was sleeping. The bears attacked a couple other people in the campground also. Last I heard, there was no issues with food storage when it was investigated. From all I have heard, the bears simply decided to eat a person that nite. They caught them when they came back to the site to continue feeding, it would appear. Bears, both blacks and grizzlies, occasionally attack to kill, no particular threat needed, and sometimes they have chosen to do it in a predatory manner, meaning they intend to eat the person they attack.

Sad about the guy that got shot accidently.

I was reading an article this morning about how Banff NP in Canada has handled their grizzly issue. All hikers in certain high grizzly areas must travel in groups of a minimum of 4 or 6 (can't remember which) and must carry canisters of pepper spray. Failure to do so results in citation and fines.
Research has shown that bears don't attack people in groups.
Seems like a smart idea to avoid confrontation between animals and hikers in National Parks.

i teach my kids to stay together by telling them "lions eat the stragglers"
that is true of pretty much all predators. too many eyes & ears reduce success on the stalk.
that said nothing about animals is an absolute. even groups get hit. but i like the mandotory pepper spray. it may save some young bear's life.

A lot of people don't seem to understand that people are made of meat.

Grizzlies won't usually attack unless provoked. Provocation can consist of getting inside their personal space, which happens to be rather large.

Sometimes in the National Parks someone gets killed by a bear that has been carefully trained by other tourists to be extremely dangerous. So it doesn't actually have to be something the victim did.

Jack Hanna was with a group when a yearling grizzly charged them.

I should have said groups of six (and I'm assuming more than six)
I found the article: http://www.spokesman.com/stories/201...policy-review/

"At first, people were required to hike in groups of six. The group size was later revised to a minimum of four. Hikers also must carry bear spray on the Winnewanka trail.
The group size is based on research by Stephen Herrero, a professor emeritus at the University of Calgary, Alberta. In reviewing a century’s worth of data on grizzly attacks in North American parks, Herrero couldn’t find a single instance of a group of six being attacked. The majority of attacks involved solo hikers or groups of two.

I can't get the whole article.
Herrero needs to talk to Jack Hanna. While the articles about his group being charged by a young grizzly don't give exact numbers it does sound there were 6 or more in it.

A group of seven were jumped by a griz in Alaska this summer. Four were injured.

Just saying, when you start trying to make "rules" that bears follow, they don't. The only thing absolutely predictable about bears is that they aren't.

Thanks for the update Lisa.... and I agree about feeling sorry for them. I couldn't imagine how awful the guy that fired the shot feels.

They weren't exactly in a group Malamute.... the boys were spread out in single file crossing a stream and not even all within eyesight of each other. The one in the lead came around a corner and almost ran into the bear, turned and ran the other way bringing the agitated bear back to the next boys in line. The bear just followed.

I went bear hunting one time and when I saw my first pile of steaming bear crap my part of the hunt was over and I had one of the guides escort me to a chopper landing site for a fast trip back to civilization.
