What was wrong with the old moustraps?

These new ones where you put the bait....that piece is too heavy. I have thrown a couple away now because they would not set.

Mousetraps are regressing.....

I highly recommend "A Better Mousetrap". They are made of grey plastic, can be reused infinitely, and they won't amputate your finger when you set them. They work very well, yet don't maim you or splatter the mouse when they catch 'em.

Old mousetraps stink, unless your have surgeon's fingers.

I like the victor one-hand "quick-set" set traps. Just smears some peanut butter on the inside of the top.

We prefer the sticky traps so we can just pick up the entire thing and throw it away. In fact we just bought some today.

I still buy the old ones. The Victor traps with the small metal bait holder. Tractor supply carries them. If you can't find them, order online.. You're right they are better. The more politically correct stores are have almost stopped selling anything that kills a pest, Walmart etc..

I love them. Especially the suspense as I set the trigger.

They sell guns, they sell ammo, but they will not stoop so low as to sell something as cruel as an effective mousetrap.

Victor FTW.

I remember many, many years ago in this old farm house we had a family of little "deer"mice living in our ceilings. It sounded like they wore army boots running around up there every night. Well...we put a mouse trap in an actual hole in the ceiling..yep..old farm house for sure...and within a few seconds caught a mouse. Replaced the trap immediately and yet again...another mouse. Set it again..and another member of the family..Well..after about 5 little mice I told my husband to let it be for the night. You would think if one family member didn't come home you wouldn't send another one out to scout around.. I thought might were smarter than humans !!??

Once upon a time in an oil refinery, I took a book out of my office bookshelf. A mouse had been eating my book (destructive little rodents!). The chewing looked fresh, so I went over to the warehouse to get a mousetrap. The man at the warehouse said they didn't stock mousetraps any longer, but told me he would dispatch a professional exterminator that same day.

Sure enough, an exterminator appeared at my office door. I showed him the damaged book. Yep, mouse damage for sure. He began explaining mouse psychology to me, showing me where the "mouse run" in my office was. He placed a humane trap in the run, which was a small shallow plastic tray, perhaps 3 inches x 4 inches, with yellow sticky stuff in it. The theory was that the mouse would get stuck when he stepped in the tray.

Of course, over the next few days the mouse continued to feast on my textbooks, while no mouse appeared in the tray. We did manage to catch a daddy long legs spider in the tray though.

On the way home one night I stopped at an Ace Hardware store and bought an old-fashioned, Victor brand, "whack him on the head" mousetrap. The next day I primed the trap and baited it with peanut butter. I got the little varmint the first night.

The only thing you need to know about mouse psychology is that they prefer peanut butter over paper.

For a while, there was a mouse trap out with a plastic block of cheese on the baitpiece. I can't remember now if you were suppose to put a "smell" on it, rub some peanut butter on it or what. All I could think about was if I used a plastic block of cheese and woke up in the morning with a plastic mouse in the trap....

Victor FTW.
They (WM) sell several types off mousetraps. They are in a four foot section near the cleaning items, usually at the end of the run. Victor, Tom Cat and several other brands

How do you kill the mouse, though?

I can't for the life of me set the new traps. If I could find the old ones, I think I'd buy a bunch.

I get the old fashioned variety at the local Family Dollar store. I've found I get the best results with them.

I had no idea this mouse trap thing was such a universal problem. I bought some Victor traps with yellow plastic bait tray and ended up throwing them away.

Maybe it had something to do with the weight of my bait, I'm cheap so I superglue two halves of a peanut as bait and then top it off with a little peanut butter.
Never had one successfully steal the bait and I can catch half a dozen before replacing the peanut.

You don't kill it that's why it's a humane trap. A whole lot more humane to let the poor little mouse die of thirst. (sarcasm intended)

We were the target of a mouse invasion once. I picked up some sticky traps and put them out and caught a mouse in pretty short order. These were pretty small mice, and I notice they only covered a small portion of the trap, leaving a fair bit of still tacky glue. Well, the frugal gears started turning and I decided just to wack the stuck mouse in the head with a wrench and put the trap back and see what happened. A few hours later, there was yet another mouse on said trap. Repeat step 1. In 24 hours, I had 6 little mice stuck to one glue trap. Not quite as economical as a Victor, but not too shabby. Funny thing is, that was when we lived in town, now that we have moved to the contry, I haven't seen a single mouse in the house (knock on wood!).
