I'm amazed

I am totally amazed at the number of people who will move out to the country and try to live like they're in the city living in an apartment.

What is the deal?

Don't they understand that if you let things just grow up because you don't have the time to take care of it you will have problems with varmits and things like fire hazard? Mice love leaf piles which attact snakes. If you don't get the leaves off the ground you have erosion. You need grass. Who said you had to mow it every week.

I'm also amazed by those who will water and mow 5 acres of front yard.

Xeriscaping is another option for areas where water is at a premium. It looks nice, prevents erosion and uses very little water.

There is normally enough water here to support bermuda. But grass won't grow under leaves. Oak trees don't much like leaves under them either. The eastern red cedar that has invaded Oklahoma kills anything under it leaving the ground subject to erosion.

Grass has much finer root systems than trees. This holds the top soil much better. Grass roots are much closer to the surface also. The thach (dead grass) also makes a better protection than leaves. One can see this on banks cut by the road or river banks. One can see the very nice smooth hills of grass lands.

On my property the only uneven or eroded soil is in the trees.

Grass will catch leaves. Grass won't grow under leaves.

Another problem is if the trees are to close together they won't be healthiy causing other problems.

City folk need to stay in the city - PERIOD! Don't come to the country and let your dogs and kids run loose. Don't litter and speed on the back roads. Don't complain that the DELICIOUS well water is too hard and ruins your hair. Don't complain that it takes you over an hour to get to work and that you are too far from conveiniences. Don't call the police every time you hear a gunshot or the neighbor's rooster is getting you up too early. I can go forever with this one, so please feel free to add to the list!

It seems like every spring, some dumb city idiot and his litter will move up here and try to live city like. We met a couple two years ago that had just bought the 80 acres next to us. After talking for about 10 minutes, they said that they were going to build a two story house with a 5,000 sq.ft bottom and the same on the top. I noticed that they were constantly looking around at the ground and asked them what they were looking for . Their reply was that she was terrified of "critters" of any kind and thankfully the real estate people had told them that there were no rattle snakes around this area. Right on ! I politely informed them that I had only "moved or something like that" 5 so far this spring. Neither my wife nor I have seen them sense. They want to convert the country into the city within minutes of getting here. Although most of them after suffering a nice hard cold winter usually leave the first of spring only to lose all or most of what they have invested.

Several years ago while I was outside of a local restaurant, a couple cidiots were in the parking area when an elderly hunter walked by with a shotgun in one hand. The women freaked out so the husband tried to call the law with his cell phone. There was no cell phone service back then, so someone finally told them he was goin squirrel hunting. We got a pretty good laugh out of it. Some people just don't need to be where the asphalt ends.

I have a neighbor who has lived here over 10 years and ask me if I use gaoline to start a fire. I don't even buy charcoal. Have plenty hickory.

Those who complain about "citiots" obviously live entirely too close to cities. lol

We don't have such critters in my part of the world.
We're too rural.

Truth be told, everywhere I've ever lived, folks LOVE when people move into the area. Even former city-dwellers. It slows the population decline.

Just because someone else's reason for living in the country isn't your reason doesn't mean you get to decide how they will live their lives or take care of their property. It's THEIRS...not yours.

Oak trees don't like leaves under them much??? I don't understand this statement. You mean to tell me I need to rake the leaves on my place every fall to make the oak trees happier? Wonder how they have survived all these eons? TTT

One tiny point I would like to make is not to assume that EVERY new person who moves to your area is from the city.

Country folks can be just as judgmental as anyone else.

Just thought I would throw that out there.

Your statement is right on Callieslamb. What ever happened to the country attitude of live & let live?

Lots of us were at one time city folk and sometimes it takes a while to change attitudes. Sheeesh!

I agree with Erin here...Although I am selfish and don't want any population growth...

I agree, good and bad in everything. I have been blessed with wonderful neighbors, close enough but not that close!
I moved from the 'city' because I wanted this life, I don't want to change anything. We are enjoying our slice of heaven.

My favorite was a new family that moved into our area who complained that the cows were too loud. First, the bought a house on 5 acres that is surrounded by cattle farms. They had to realize that there were cows when they bought the house. They are a very nice family who was just unfamiliar with the nonstop "mooing" when the calves are weaned. They weren't trying to be "city in the country", they were just uneducated on country life. They've learned a lot in their few years out here....and of course, rarely notice the cows mooing anymore.
