Rustoleum Countertop Transformations?

Has anyone tried the Rustoleum Countertop Transformations? I am skeptical, because it seems that it would get scratched and be worse than seeing the ugly old laminate.

This is an interesting idea...I will be watching this thread. I also have countertops that are in good shape, but very old and could use updating.

I have not used it, but it seems pretty pricey at $4/sq ft.

Seem slike you could almost buy new inexpensive countertops, at Lowes, for that price.

Herer are mixed reviews.

I thought it was expensive, too, but if it doesn't scratch easily it would be better than removing what is there and buying new. I would hate to have it scratch off by placing something a little rough on it and the royal blue laminate scratches show up on a sand colored top.

We looked - it was more expensive than new.

I worked in a cabinet shop some 35 years ago owned by family, we charged a bit over $10.00 a linear foot for standard laminate counter top. Looking around net it appears prices are now running in the $30-$60 ball park. I never used it, but if it held up it would seem to be a cheaper fix .

I looked at it a couple of weeks ago. At Lowe's they had an example piece of formica countertop they had redone with the Rustoleum stuff. It didn't look that good. The example they used was brown formica (laminate, whatever you call it). There was a section of the original formica, then a section with the base coat which was black, then a section with the topcoat which made it look like black granite with flakes of gold, brown & etc. in it, to show the steps and what they looked like and what the finished product looked like. To me, it looked cheap. I don't know if it wasn't properly done or what, but I didn't like it. It looked like.... I don't know....someone had spread a bunch of high gloss varnish over the (very) fake looking granite. I wouldn't spend the money on it. It would be cheaper to buy new laminate/formica countertops.

I looked at it a Lowes too. I was primarily looking for a rental apartment. I wasn't really impressed with the way the sample looked either.

My best guess is that it intended for people dressing up a house to sell that aren't really going to live with it and give it normal kitchen usage.

you could make a really nice tile countertop, for less than $4/sqft. It's not that hard to do.
