What is Manzanilla?

Was at the local discount house last weekend. There was what looked like some kind of canned fruit in glass jars (commercially packed, not home made). Thought I'd give it a try. Opened them up and tryed one. Tastes good. They are yellowish, about the size of a large grape, with a stem. A couple of hard seeds inside about the size of a pea.

Thought I'd Google them.

Found this;

"Manzanilla de la muerte (Spanish: "little apple of death"), manchineel in English (Hippomane mancinella), a tree with apple-like but poisonous fruit"

Check in to see if I am posting tomorrow.

Manzanita is not manzanilla! I can live with the first but not certain about the second.

Guatemala. Bilingual labeling so I assume it was made for US markets.

First ingredient is tejocote. Off to Google!

The label actually reads "Tejocote Manzanilla"

I made the mistake of assuming that the key word was "manzanilla".

I know from working for a market research company that manzanilla was a huge "must have" for grocery stores in areas with high Hispanic populations. Never really asked what all of the uses for it were, though but I think that it was used to make tea??

"Don't sit under the machineel tree with anyone else but me..."

We used to jokingly sing that when we lived in the Caribbean, as it would burn your bum just to sit on the ground beneath the tree if it had recently rained. Avoid at all cost!!!
