Try to look at older gas ranges, like 50 years old. They usally put out higher BTU's and have cast iorn grates. The old one I have, I can slide a heavy pot from one burner to another as the entire top is the same leval. It is also easy to take out the actual burners and clean them.

All depends on what you want to spend. I recently redid my kitchen and spent a lot of time on the Gardenweb appliance forum. THere are a lot of really nice, high end gas stoves that would work perfect for what you want, but they usually start at the $4,000 mark.

It does sound like you would do better with a stove with heavy grates, not some of the new sealed burner types. Gas is not an option for me so I had to get creative for my canning needs.

I got my new stove this past Winter & I truly LOVE it! It's a Maytag-Gemini is the model, made in the USA & a 10 year warranty on the burners which I was looking for. Everyone else that I checked on or at least the one's I could afford were only 1 year warranty's.

This has 5 burners, cast iron grates that go all across the top of the stove so it's all one level. I've already been canning on it & the power burner is great & heats up the canner in less time, and it has a double oven with all kinds of features & one of them is convection cooking.
I think it was right around $1300.00. Hope it lasts me for a long long time.

Have you thought about getting one of those relatively inexpensive outdoor propane double burners? My husband picked one up from Sportsman's Guide this summer and we plan to use it for canning (though we didn't have a chance to this year as things got ridiculously hectic with an unanticipated move). It has pretty heavy burners, and best of all, you can do the hot stuff outside rather than heating up the house.

I bought a Bosch, stainless steel with cast iron grates that are level across the top and has one extra high/hot burner. It withstands the wear and tear.

After I bought it I got to looking and I could have gotten a commercial for roughly the same price this one was originally.(I got it 1/2 price, but it was still high). So, the next one I get I'm going commercial with the extra burners and griddle area.

If you are looking for an electric stove, stay away from the new Whirlpools - have had my drop-in, range and oven for less than four years and I have had two large burners quit working and one canning burner quit(yes, had to buy a special large burner to can on!!!!!!). We don't usually buy extended warranties but we did on this because it is a drop-in, and I am so glad. They replaced the two large burners (not the canning one though - not part of the warranty) and the burner plates and fixed the problem - a wiring problem.

I feel like they no longer make electric ranges that will hold up under use when one does a lot of canning! My husband put in 220 in another building and from now on, I will use an old stove out there.

My Kenmore gas stove with heavy grates was new in 1994. I cook using heavy cast iron pots and do a lot of canning all year.

I've had to have the oven's electronic ignition replaced about 10 years ago and I have to light a couple of the burners using a match these days.

Beware of any stove/oven/range with electronic touch pads - whether gas or electric. If you have such a stove make absolute sure it is plugged into a surge protector. A power surge can wipeout the computerized touch pad control system and it is very expensive to replace. Don't ask me how I know!
