How do I discourage a fox den under the house?
We have a very old house on a slope with exposed undersides, no resident people or pets. Last night I heard a fox "coughing" at me from underneath. Set a radio on the floor playing dumb rock all night. Anybody got more advice for me? Screening off the underside isn't doable.

He's not going to want to say anywhere he feels threatened. So if you make a habit of bothering him he'll leave. Spray him with a water hose, toss dirt clods at him, shine a light on him and the like.

That would be my first try. Doesn't smell as bad as coyote urine, and not as aggressive as hosing him down or throwing dirt at him. <j/k, Watcher!>
Good luck in getting rid of it.
BTW, what is "dumb" rock? Is that as in, "As dumb as a rock"? Or is it very quiet, muted rock?
Oh, I am full of P&V today...

Run an extension cord under the house and put up some light bulbs. Put the extension cord on a timer so every two hours or so the lights will come on for 30min or so and then go off. It's possible that what you heard was simply an adult "hunting" for mice under the house. This isn't the time of year for them to be starting a den, that was done last spring. If it is an active den then they will have young that are about ready to begin traveling with the adults. The time to "den proof" your home will be sometime between Oct-Dec because they will begin looking for a den site sometime in the Jan-Feb timeframe. Hope this helps.

We bought some stuff at the feed store that is a granular concoction that keeps animals away and it really worked for us and doesnt really smell too bad. You might try something like that.

Keep a light on under there. They den in the dark, don't want to live where it is bright.

Thanks everyone!
Already have all those granules of yuck, but I'll definitely plague it with lights and generally devil the bejeezus out it. Good to know about denning times, we'll be ready to keep the defenses up. Couldn't believe how constant the barking was, I was afraid I had a rabid raccoon under there, it went on for the whole two hours I was there.

I just wish it would go out and do its job! We are so overrun with rabbits, mice, ground squirrels and gophers, I'm glad to see a freaking coyote these days. Even the rattlesnakes were scarce this year. The rodents are what do the damage, not to mention those thieving raccoons. My real problem is being without dogs right now.

After he leaves, you will need to ask his fleas to leave, too. Every fox is a flea donor, and a fox den is a flea city.

I'll trade you some foxes for some rabbits. We have way too many foxes around here and they have about wiped out the rabbits and quail. The hawks and owls take a toll too. Years ago you could get the limit on rabbits and quail easily most days and lots of people hunted but you rarely saw a fox. Now you see foxes all the time and I don't know of anyone who even bothers to keep a rabbit or bird dog anymore. I haven't even seen anyone hunting rabbits or birds in over 2 years because it is a waste of time.
