I'd like to filter the water that comes out of the tanks for use in the house and outside to eliminate the obvious and also cysts, if possible. I know its more expensive, but I have livestock that depend on healthy water and also I practice organic gardening methods so I really don't want to add any more chemicals or bugs into the food chain.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of situation/setup and any recommendations?
Would I need to have say, 500 gallons of 'county' water filtered separately from 'well' water since they have different requirements? The way my home is plumbed, I can run either through my pipes to all parts of the property, depending on what is most available. I can plumb the storage for the county water the same way. I need to have some water stored back for emergency purposes.
I prefer to use the well water as it costs me less in the long run and all of the outside watering will be using the wells, if possible.

One of the water systems that was put in for an elementary may have a clue for you. The water came from a well and was tested frequently. There was no iron or bacterial contamination. They had a metering system that injected chlorine/bleach into the system anyway to meet regulations. The water was then fed into a holding(contact) tank (500 gal.) to allow the chlorine to act. A valve that was controlled by the level in a 400 gal tank allowed water from the 500 gal tank to flow to the 400 gal. tank and from there to the school.
I would experiment with treating the water from the well with bleach in a separate contact tank. That should precipitate out the clear iron and kill any bacteria. Then transfer that water to your storage tanks. I'd use the city water to occasionally flush the iron from the bottom of the contact tank. You can buy tanks with conical bottoms and drains. It would help to get a water test to understand whether you have ferric or ferrous iron.
