CDL to drive a tractor

http://www.infowars.com/feds-want-to...farm-vehicles/

No mention if this is for if you operate it on the road , or operate it anywhere.
Anyone know of any more info?

Don't think they will try to regulate this in Texas. Can you imagine 11 yr olds or 8 yr olds with a CDL?? Its what happens when city folks move or try to understand the rural farm folks.

The news articles were lisleading to say the least.

Plenty of hysteria for little fact.

The proposed regulation addressed two points.

1. Whether hauling farm products accross state lines constitutes "interstate commerce", thus changing the exemption status for farm truck drivers.

2. Whether hauling farm products on a share crop arrangment, consitiutes a "for hire" situation, which farm truck drivers are not allowed to do.

Politcal wrangling, not much else.

I keep having these pictures in my mind of 8-year-old boys with ball caps and booster seats driving tractor trailers down the interstate, lol . I suppose the gear shift and the pedals will need extensions...

You have to be 16 to drive a farm machine on the road but no license required, in Ontario. You need an SMV sign lights at night front and back saftey chains on towed equip and you have to be operatign a safe vehicle and towed implement....... which is wide open to interpretation, but you won't get away with dragging a falling apart wreck down the road or four huge grain wagons behind a little tractor or even a pick up., unless the wagons have brakes.... and even then it can be touch and go depending on the terrain and the police.

The idea is for the government to get "in your face", and see just how far the public can be pushed. They are a lot closer to finding out than they know.

Now if they'd make RV drivers get CDL's that would be nice--and make some sense! Our kids all started driving tractor at about 6, but in the fields.

I'm wondering where it all started.

In ND every once in a while the farmers decide they want much stricter laws re trucks, truckdrivers, etc in the oil patch.

Only of course the courts make it clear the law will apply to everyone equally. Farmers don't want to get cdl's to have to log and limit hours, etc, and the idea gets dropped.

For a while.

Plowjockey, I think _those_ issues are still on the front burner, people from Indiana are dealing with it already.

Specificly the farm tractor (not semi tractor) and combine issues have been put to bed for a while anyhow.

They were seperate issues. For the one you mention, you don't even have to haul grain to a different state. If you haul it 5 miles to your local elevator, and that elevator sells some grain out of state, then it's considered that _you_ are selling to a different state and so you need to meet commercial haul rules, not farm rules.

That is still an issue, and alive as I understand it.
