Devastation in my woods

I posted about the straight line winds a couple of weeks ago. Took a walk in my woods today for the first time since the storm. Wow! At least a dozen large trees plus numerous limbs. The red oaks seem to have taken it the worst, including a giant 4' diameter one. A few white oaks, and a couple of ash. Looks like quite a few good saw logs and cords and cords of firewood. I got my work cut out for me.

OMG that wind did do some damage! You were fortunate no building was destroyed.

Tink, since you like mushrooms so much, do you plan on making use of those hardwoods? I have been reading you can cut lengths of those, set them into the air vertically and fill them with spores.

Find someone with a portable saw mill and mill that into lumber! It's worth more than firewood.

Yeah, that is my plan, except I'll probably haul them to a sawmill. There will still be a lot of firewood, not to mention some posts and poles.

Sorry to hear about it but it looks like you are planning to turn the lemons into lemonade!

It's always amazing how wind can be so destuctive in small areas. Straight line winds are scarey!

If the trees don't have limbs for the first 16 feet or so, have them evaluated as possibly veneer trees.

Sorry about the loss of your trees. I'm glad they didn't do any damage when they came down.

Good idea. How do you find a veneer buyer?

Check your phone book for your local State Forester Agent. They will know of sawmills looking for such logs.

I've had way more trees blow over this year than I have had in the the last 15 years or so collectively.

Me too. Wet ground and high winds are a bad combination. This last storm was funny. Almost all the damage was in a band about 10 yards wide, all the way through the woods. Almost like dominoes.

If you carry em to a sawmill, you might want to examine em very closely, to make sure there aren't any cracks or checks... and it might be wise to 'be there' when the logs are getting cut. If you see lots of bad lumber coming off the saw, you can stop the process.

I use to carry all my logs over to a bandsaw miller, and initially, he'd cut whatever 'sows ears' I'd carry, and I'd end up paying for expensive planks that were near useless... he 'explained' about wind damage, and the errors that'd get in the finished lumber.

I have my own mill now, and will cut every thing that 'dies'... if the checking/cracks are too severe, I make beams, where the checks/cracks aren't as devastating.

Sounds to me like the storm kicked out a small tornado which went through your wooded area.

Article in last Friday's county paper. One cattle farmer when out to find 14 dead cows, four dead calves and two $2,500 bulls. He figures lightening hit a wild cherry tree they were milling under. An estimated $20K loss for him.

I think that the cause was the fact that the wind came from the north which is almost unheard of here for strong summer storms. These are trees that have always been protected from strong winds by other trees up until now. There is no evidence of rotation, the trees are all laying in the same direction.
