Woodpecker i.d. question

I know it's a long shot, but all of us, dh and I and the kids, are all trying to figure out what kind of woodpecker we saw today. I have tried googling images, and with dial-up, it's maddening waiting for images to load, if they load at all. We have Audobon's Birds of North America and we didn't find it in the book.

I am thinking it might be an immature bird and that's why we're having trouble finding pictures of it.

Definitely a woodpecker, about the size of a Red Headed woodpecker. It's back was mostly black with some faint barring or maybe mottling. The folded up wing tips formed a solid white band. It's head seemed to be mostly black or very dark brownish black, and it had some dark red markings above and slightly behind each eye, like it was wearing red eyeshadow. No other red visible on the birds head. It had what looked like a thin white 'collar' at the base of it's neck but I couldn't see it's front very well.

I wasn't able to see most it's front, or get a good look at the top of it's head. I don't recall if it had white on it's face or not.

Feet looked dark, maybe black. No crest on it's head. Beak was dark.

Location is southeast Texas, along edge of heavily wooded area, main trees being pine and oaks, mixed with other hardwoods and a few cedars.

Like I said, I know it's a long shot, but I thought there might be an ornithologist out there somewhere.

Did you try studying sapsuckers in your book?

To me also. Here's another photo of one as a juvenile.

YEP!!! That's it! Right down to the faint barring/mottling on it's back and the red "eye makeup".

Thanks everyone! And the Audobon's book shows an immature but it looks nothing like the pics in the links.

I don't like the Audobon's as well as the Peterson's Guides because the photos they use don't always show a good view of indentifying markings

Peterson's uses drawings that emphasize the things you need to look for

Second on the quality of the Peterson guides. While Audubon has some nice pics and great maps they just don't have the quality and ease of use that the Peterson illustrations offer.

I have both. I use the Peterson much more.
