Question about Hawks

Hoping someone can chime in. For the last 3 days there has been a good size hawk (barely caught a glimpse) out in our big trees. The poor thing sits and calls and calls and calls. Three plaintive 'screeches' in a row-repeated over and over and over.I can hear it go up the valley and do the same thing. We dont have any birds or anything to attract it. Is it calling for a mate? Maybe its mate was shot? Its not the same kind of sound they make when they are hunting. Extreme NW Oregon if that helps.

Just wondering.

It's about time for the adults to begin kicking the young uns out. Probably just a juvenile that's hungry and wanting to be fed.

Could be an adult trying to get the youngsters to come out.

This is ALL day every day for the last 3-today is the fourth. Im talking 5 and 6 hours. Either its parents are ignoring it, or something happened to the babies?

I've never heard them call that long or often. Several times a day yes, but not all day. I would have to agree that something must have happened.

That's what I was wondering. I've never heard or seen anything like it. Thought maybe it was a quirk of Rainier hawks. (kidding) Poor thing sounds so SAD

ding ding ding!

They will indeed cry all day for many days trying to get someone, anyone to feed them. When most raptor chicks leave the nest they actually weigh more than their parents who have been busy stuffing jr so they can go a while without eating since there's a learning curve once they leave the nest to deal with as well

I think Mom and Pop flew the coop to Portland for some R&R.
It cried all day today too. Not so much a squawk as a VERY plaintive cry.
Makes ME want to go find the darn thing and feed it. Or do it in! (KIDDING!! I love them except when the have chicken dinner)

The same thing happened here - one hawk was sitting on the roof of the barn, looking down and salivating over the chickens, while another was in the fence row calling back. I think the youngster was looking for a free meal, and the adult was afraid to come out

It must be that time of year. I travel and work outside. I have been hearing that call all over.
