First fruit harvest

I just have to brag a bit. I have lived in 8 houses in the last 32 years. Except for the two while we were in college, I have planted fruit trees at every one of them. But we've never stayed long enough to harvest anything.

Today, I was mowing the lawn and got a bit too close to the pear tree. It has 15 pears on it and I have been waiting and checking daily. One fell off. Oops! When I picked it up, I noticed that it was soft, so I used my soda and washed it off.

It was delicious! The best pear ever. 14 to go.

Congratulations! We had fruit trees at our last home, but here only have plum trees, which I guess we should be thankful for but we don't really care for them. We're moving next month and our new home has a huge pie cherry tree. We're planning on adding more ASAP!

I planted these the same month we moved here - 2 1/2 years ago. It's their 3 summer. I have 1 peach on a peach tree. No apples yet, no cherries and no apricots....yet.....These are semi-dwarf trees. Standard sized trees will take longer to produce.

There are too many corn fields around for the deer to bother with my trees - so far anyway.

Oh I hope it stays that way for you! I have a roving herd here near the SW Allegan County/ Van Buren County line that moves from corn fields to hay fields to my garden. They come into the yard and gather my apples too.

I will be very PO'd if I don't get venison to can this year!

Glad your fruit trees are starting to make you happy

Hopefully the deer won't take a liking to it!

Congrats! I know what is like to plant fruit trees and not be around long enough to enjoy them!

My property came with one apple tree, finally got a second one with about 5 apples on it. Planted five more fruit trees this spring. DH really didn't want to plant them, as we moved out of MN never getting an apple, and moved out of WI before we got apples too. We'll see how long we stay here in SD.

As to the deer - I'm surrouded by farm land with lots of corn and those darn deer love my apples. They only pick the low fruit of the mature tree, but killed the first new tree I put beside it. THe second one is doing better, but I learned to protect the tree.

Right now they are coming around every few days looking for fallen apples. It's kind of funny to go out and see the ground full of fallen apples, and go out the next morning and have every single one gone.

Unfortunatly by the time hunting season comes along, the deer have moved on to other grazing areas.

How exciting! I planted ..well, dh & sons planted a Peach & Plum tree both semi dwarf last year the plums didn't survive our long bouts of drought but the peach tree had 9 peaches that I couldn't wait to eat..when they were ready to eat I decided to let them stay on the tree one more day..the next day I came home from work and pulled into the driveway which I have to pass by my peach tree and the first thing I noticed was there was no peaches on my tree..I hurried up parked my vehicle jumped out and ran to my peach tree to see my fears were true not one peach left on my tree..I started crying as we had just purchased this (first time home buyer) house and I (we) put so much work into starting our self sufficient place and all those month's of waiting and checking out my fruit trees daily to not have reaped any rewards in the end...there was no evidence of any animal or tracks or broken branches no pit's no nothing..the only thing I comes to mind is someone stoled them in the middle of the night as I had just looked at them just before dark the night efore..the Peach tree is aout 50 ft away from the a well traveled road..That same Peach tree has several peaches on this year also..so I hope to get to enjoy it like you enjoyed your pear! BTW..I added 2 apple,3 pear,1 peach and 2 cherry trees to complete my orchard all semi dwarf..

Isn't it wonderful how much happiness 15 pears can bring?
When we moved to our farm in 2004 I started right away planting fruit trees. DH thought I was nuts as usual : ) We now have a peach, 3 pears,2 plums, a sweet cherry and a pie cherry, 2 apricots, a nectarine and 7 apple varieties. The peach produced the second year, but this is the first year it really produced well. The peaches are big enough and actually ripened on the tree. This is also the first year we have 10-12 pears on each tree and one apple tree has a dozen or so apples for the first time. So excited!
I hope the peaches are still there tonight, I'm planning a peach pie : )
Here's a pic of our pears-

It's been fun reading your comments!

We have 2 apples, 2 peach, 2 pear, 1 apricot and 1 cherry. I'd love to plant more - especially a pie cherry tree. We have plenty of room. Maybe the deer don't like the cows? We don't even have dog either.

3 apples, 1 asion pear, 2 peach, 1 cherry all but one of the apples plated this year. Japanese beetle loves my cherry tree, I hope it can recover, not sure what I can do for it at this point. ;-{

Callie you sound like me, I used to dig up my trees when I moved, until I gave up. When we moved here I dug trees. Unfortunately, the person that was "babysitting" them for me(they were in huge pots) until we were able to move them-didn't water them. Our Pear trees gave us about 6 pears last year. This Year, I"m removing bunches of them, because they are going to break the branches!

I have 3 pie cherries , Not enough-the birds get them the second they are ripe. It is hard to cover the trees.

How exciting to finally get a harvest of pears! I wonder, if you have 15 pears this year, how many will you have next year?

I have a Jonathan apple tree that is producing for the first time this year. It has 8 apples. Maybe next year I'll get 16 or 24 or 32!
