Cool Potable Water Cistern

I would like to use a water cistern for my potable water supply, during periods of extended electrical outages. The info I could find about doing this, says to start with treated water. I will be using water from a private well (raw water). That source says municipality treated water is only good for two days in a cistern, unless one watches the chlorine level.

I am sure there are people out there that use raw water in their cistern. What are you doing?

Thanks for your help.

Doesn't answer your question but I have friends who hate the taste of their well water. They will use it for everything but drinking and cooking. For that they come here and fill 5-gallon jugs out of my spring water. He bought a wall mounted water filter, hose from one end hooks up to water hydrant. Other hose goes into jug being filled.

I don't know what size filter he has in it - e.g., 5mm or 20mm.
