my cousin just sent me a text that they have a flying squirrell in a vent.
I have seen tame sugar gliders that looked the same to me...

I was thinking about trying to tame it...

No they are not the same thing, we have friends that have sugar gliders, they are nocternal, so they only come out of their pouch at night. And they are good pets, but I wouldn`t think the squirrels would make good pets. > Thanks Marc

Sugar Gliders are marsupials. They are alot like rabbits, and if they stress out they can have heart attacks and die. They bond to their owners scent in forty days. They can live up to twenty years. they can be mena as well as flighty. Some have a tendency to bit if not tamed correctly. My neighbor fostered a normal squirrel, and it was terribly lous and stunk to high heaven I dont know much about flying squirrels. Good luck

I had a pet flying squirrel named critter for a few years. Got him as a baby from a hollow tree I cut down. He was smart and pretty friendly. He had a nest above the curtains and rode around in my shirt pocket - I fed him peanuts and field corn. One day a cat got him.

Yeah, they're not the same thing like everyone has said. If it is an adult I wouldn't try and tame it. It might be a mama with babies somewhere. They are so cute though. My absolute favorite native mammal.

Squirrels are rodents and for the most part rodents make fine pets if you get them young and handle them a lot. If not they tend to be biters.

Sugar gliders are natives of Australia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_glider If it's a sugar glider it should be caged or euthanized, so non-native species are not disrupting the local ecosystem. I hope that it is a flying squirrel. Flying squirrels are generally pretty mild mannered and can be tamed up here in the frosty north. Watcher said it well, ".... for the most part rodents make fine pets if you get them young and handle them a lot. If not they tend to be biters."

They have completely different dietary requirements. The flying squirrel is much easier to feed than the other one.

We kept and bred sugar gliders for several years. You have to stay on top of cleaning their cages as the males have scent glands thy mark with. Gliders are pretty easy to care for and can skin an apple down to a see through skin. If you handle the babies early they make great pets, but I have never had much luck getting adults that aren't used to it tamed down that far.

I also trapped and sold flying squirrels as a kid at an auction in West Plains Missouri that did an exotic day once a year. Made decent money doing it and learned a lot about keeping the little devils. Both are good pets in my opinion if you start with young ones. My preference would be the gliders.

My cousin was freaking about this flying squirrel that she could see in the vent and he was looking right at her. I wodered about that part because they always have an escape tunnel. So I drove 30 minutes to help her with it , took one look in the vent and told her it must have moved because all I saw was a ball of insulation. That was the "squirrell" she showed me the "eyes" 2 pieces of foil that was in the ball of insulation. She owes me one !!!

Fly squirrels might make a good pet, but where do you keep the moose they usually hang around with?
