Interesting new use for an old pool

Just came across this idea on another forum. A family used an old in-ground pool to create an urban greenhouse. The family claims they get "about 8 fresh eggs a day, unlimited tilapia fish, organic fruit, veggies, and herbs 365 days a year."

More at: http://gardenpool.org/

Sort of strange, I suppose, but it seems rather innovative.

That's cool. I'd like to do something like that but I'd imagine heating it in the winter would be my problem.

Not really.
An old gas hot water heater, tubing along the floor, a Rhino gas tank and a thermostat would do well.
Being underground with thick walls would help a great deal in getting adn keeping it warm.

Wow - fantastic.

Coincidentally I just drained the old concrete pool in my backyard and have been trying to figure out what to do with it. We are not really swimmers, but the pool came with the property and it seems a waste to not use it for something. Maybe this is the thing.

Thanks for the interesting link.

Cool, but unlimited tilapia? Come on, even the Nile River does not have unlimited tilapia...

Scott SW Ohio, when we referred to our pool as 43K gallons of fire suppression, our insurance agent gave us a deduction on our bill. Having said that, I do realize in a city situation where it would be considered an attractive nuisance, your agent might not be so generous. We're out in the boonies just inside the zone from the nearest fire station to get the best rating as well.

I've often thought of growing fish or prawns during the summer in our pool but DH doesn't care for either. Actually, he hates both. Oh, well.

Awesome idea.

Where are the eggs coming from? They are keeping chickens down in there? I didn't see any.

Anyone do a small "mini-system" using a fish tank and grow something like lettuce? I like this idea to try out this winter in the living room...

YT has already pulled the vid on that link.

There is a HUGE urban homesteading and permaculture movement up there in the Phoenix Metro area (the people are in a burb of Phoenix). And aquaponics is getting popular.

Very cool link though!
