Question for Forerunner Scrapping related

Last night I was having trouble sleeping so I cruised some of the older posts here. I found Angie's links to your scrapping threads. I didn't see anything in there about nickle. Things like the heating element on electric stoves are mostly nickle.

Also, I'm wondering about electrolysis for separating metals. Say if you wanted to separate copper and zinc. It's run through my mind a few times that a small solar set up would pay for itself in pretty short order, even if it was mind numbingly slow.

Nickel and stainless rather go hand-in-hand.

Copper/zinc combo in yellow brass would not be profitable for the common scrapper.
Easing the tin from heavy copper might pay if one was particularly savvy.

My high temp scrapping experiences are limited to the making of aluminum, zinc and lead ingots. I do occasionally melt and pour my own brass brazing rods.

One time, I did melt a batch of #2 copper in attempt to make a #1 ingot.
Took an awful lot of heat.....would not recommend it.

The mechanical separation of most metals still pays well, if you can get the raw materials.

I was thinking if one were to use pennies for example, and bathe them in a sodium solution and charge them it would separate the zinc from the copper.

Kind of like electroplating, using pennies as the anode. It wouldn't be profitable if you were to use power from the electric company or a genset, but a small RV solar panel would work; granted it would be a slower process.

I wonder if this would work for other combo's as well.

I've not looked into electrolysis enough to know the particulars, but one thing I have learned over the years, picking up bits and pieces here and there....

Mankind has lost more simple technological processes for utilizing the raw materials that this earth provides than he'll ever begin to regain.
Again, that was no accident.

Electrowinning is the opposite of electroplating.
