Water Well Cap Fitting

My water well cap has this opening, that is about the size of a small electrical receptical box. It did just have a interior smooth metal outlet cover, that eventually rusted and dissolved.

What is this opening for?

Is there something else that should be mounted on the opening, that might seal better?

It looks like a 2x4 box. You can find an exterior blank cover. It will be plastic or galvanized steel, with a rubber gasket to seal it. A hardware store will have it. I don't know how well the screws will go into the rusted threads.

The wiring to the pump should pass through that box. I haven't seen a cap like that. You could use it to splice the wring. I'd prefer to have a straight run from the pressure switch to the pump without splices. I'd just replace the cap and gasket. You might have to retap the screw holes ... carefully.

I agree, junction box. You can do as suggested and just replace the missing cover with a new one, or if you want to spend $$$$$ you could have a new sanitary cap placed onto the well casing.

A store like Ace or Loews or Home Depot has plastic well caps without any holes. Not much money I think mine cost 8 or 12 dollars.
