Anybody like watching ole time horse farming??

Go to U Tube, and (When We Farmed With Horses, 1- 2-3 ) I loved it, cause I and my family then were up there, and my kids were a bit younger than the kids youll see in the vid. Id Love to go back again. Too Far, DeMoines Ia, To expensive, and too many responsibilities here at home. Ill bet those who watch it will see something? they have never seen before. I sure did.

There's a Mennonite or Amish community not far from where I live..I like to go out there sometimes and watch the horses work.

They show it on RFD-TV but I can't think of the program title right now. Love it! Would love to have a solo draft horse or a team but the feed and farriar bill is a deterrant.

I have neighbours (not Mennonites or Amish) who love to use their horses for ploughing. Every year they have a great ploughing match with 8 -14 teams showing up. It's great fun. I'll post a few pictures!

WATCHING, YES, doing the work, NO!

Back in the early 90's we decided to fill in a washout with horses and a dump bucket attachment, basically you scrape the dirt into the bucket and dumped in the washout using the horses as power. Another time we ran a old thresher by horse, work it was.

Yea, Dad used to plow the field with our young gelding who was not worked with any other horses & he had an attitude, to say the least. But he plowed the field and disk and harrowed it non the less with Dads engorgement. But only working a few times a year he never did get used to it. We used to pick and shuck all the field corn with horse drawn wagon, and she ( OLD DOBBIN, she was 24 when she died, had a good later life and knew it, she would take care of the little children, and wait if they fell off) would just keep a slow pace down the row while we picked and shucked till she would get to the far end of the field then she would stop and wait to be turned down the next row. Boy did my hands get sore from all that shucking those dry corn ears. Then I knew what corn huskers lotion was invented for. WOW. Good memories working with Dad, but I don't want to do it again now. I'd rather use a corn picker, (combine). I tend to like new technology for actual work. and the old stuff for play.

I love watching the horses work...and even got to try my hand at it...I don't own horses and even though I would love to have some, I realize that the big Percherons are not for me. I'm hoping some day to get a Canadian or maybe a Welsh pony..but time will tell. In the meantime, I do get the pleasure of going to this annual event and taking photos

I see farmers using horses all the time. It goes without saying that they are all Amish. It's slow and the amount of milk production most of the farms I pick up that use horses versus the acreage is pathetic but still an interesting glimpse into how farming was done 60-70 years ago.
