Are You Prepared?

As I stand outside my door, yesterday I could see the horribly beautiful smoke plume, today the sky is grey, the smell of smoke getting stronger with each moment.

73 miles south of where I live 100,000 acres have burnt in 2, yes 2!, days. One town evacuated, another on stand-by. Alpine, Greer, Hanningan's Meadow, San Carlos Indian Reservation; at 8,000 ft, a beautiful slice of heaven.

There's 1300 personnel fighting the Wallow Fire, one of Arizona's largest since recordkeeping. 76 degrees, 9 degrees humidity, and winds of 24 mph, SW.

A friend evacuated 3 horses, going back for 2 more and wasn't allowed in. Sheriff said they'd get them. If you leave your home during an evacuation, you can't return to get the rest of your livestock. If you elect to stay, you cannot leave your property to evacuate later or you'll be fined.

This, along with the floods, tornados, etc. makes me wonder how many are really prepared for an evacuation or will scrambling at the last minute be the mode of the day? How many have pictures of your homestead for insurance purposes? How many have cash on hand if the electricity goes out? And last but not least, have you made arrangements with someone to camp with your critters on their land?

Food for thought for sure. Fortunately, my best friend would take me and my critters in on a moment's notice and has facilities to house us all. Same for me if it were her. We have already discussed this and yes, you are right, everyone who homesteads needs a plan before they need a plan.
