Can a chicken have twins?
My kids asked this about a double yolker egg and asked me if it had been fertilized could it have grown two chickens?
I am not sure if this is a dumb question or not but I realize I have never thought about it before, nor have I ever read about this in any book or online. LOL

While it CAN happen, it usually doesn't. When you look at the size of a baby chick when it hatches you realize its big compared to the egg shell. Egg shells do not stretch so both chicks would be squished and more than likely die before they fully form. There have been some who have had success but not many for this reason. IMHO its cruel to try.

Yes, the two embryos in the single shell can start to develop.
The process will be fatal for both as there is not enough room in the shell for them both to survive.
Theoretically, one could support them outside the shell. I do not know of anyone actually doing this successfully though.

Maybe, but.......The way I understand it, the chicken does Not hatch from the Yolk. It hatches from the kinda white stringy stuff in the white,, if it is in fact fertilized,
The Yolk is actually the food that the hatchling absorbs as it grows......IIRC, from my Biology Class, 56 years ago.

Fraternal, maybe, but never identical. Identical twins result from cell division within the fertilized ovum of identical genetic material(a single cell division). Fraternal twins come from two ova sharing the same womb, or shell, in the case of the chicken.
If you could hatch chicken eggs in vitro, they would be fraternal twins only if they shared the same petri dish during incubation.....
There are no living fraternal twin chickens because they all cross the road together.

My chicken thinks she just had seven-uplets.
I think it's on backyard chicken forums.....but someone there did hatch twins. Do look for the video/explanation.

She forced the hatch so the chicks would have a chance to live. If they had went to full term they would have died as there just isn't enough room for them to move. The video in question was an experiment to see if it was possible. If I remember right the chicks hatched out alive but died shortly afterwards. Things like this do not happen in nature for this reason and if she hadn't tried she would have never known. This is how the world of science and biology is learned.

When I saw the blood in the video, I thought they wouldn't survive. In the past when I tried to help chicks out of the shell, if they bled like that they did not make it. Nature does it best.

after watching the video understanding why she was doing what she was doing, then reading some of the comments i felt bad for her there are some really nasty ones on there i think she should have explained a bit more what and why she was doing what she was doin.
