Just kidding, I'm pretty sure they are oyster mushrooms, but I'm going to check with a mushroom site before I cook them up.

Well, you found one more than I did.... Never found morels here, but I keep looking. Yep, on a log. Slight smell of anise. I could smell more, but danged if I could find them.

If not you won't make the same mistake twice. LOL!

We supposedly have Oyster mushrooms all over our woods. I don't know how to identify them though so... they just rot out there along with all the other mushrooms. I need a field guide to come teach me.

You better send them down to me and let me check them out for you!

Yep, you found oyster mushrooms. These are very delicious. My wife and I bought a bunch of oyster mushroom spores to try and grow our own.

I was at our grocery store on Wednesday. They had morels for sale. Guess how much. ($59/lb!)

Yes, I'd agree with WIHH...these are most likely oysters, but I'd get an expert's opinion first.

Well, I've always been interested in growing mushrooms. It just seems there is so very much to it that I have been discouraged.

"Start Mushrooming" by Stan Tekiela & Karen Shanberg says of oysters:

1. white gills like the deadly amanita but also look for---
2. doesn't grow from a cup
3. doesn't have a ring around its stem
4. doesn't have white spores

It looks like I'm a day late; glad you're ok and enjoyed your meal!

I was really pretty confident eating them. I've had them before, years ago. I have my own book and also researched them online. Everything I found confirmed that they were safe.

Did you see any teeny black beetles crawling on the mushroom? That can be a confirmation that it's an oyster:

Nope, I got lucky. Either I caught them early enough, or they are not that common here. I have seen them before though.

Dipped them in egg and milk, rolled them in masa (corn meal), and fried them.

I use to bring Oyster mushrooms home every fall when out deer hunting with bow & arrow. I would carry along a backpack and sometimes I would find enough Oysters to fill it full. If I could find plenty I would dehydrate a lot of them and store them in ziplock bags and eat on them all winter long. I was better at finding oyster mushrooms then at finding morels.

I've not found them in the fall, I always find them this time of year.

I like to dice them up and stew for a few minutes in a little butter and can them. I also dry them.

DH made me a tool for harvesting them. Most times they grow on "populus" trees (poplar) and they will be very high up. He took a metal spatula and inserted the handle into a long dowel. I use it to slice them off the trees above arm's reach.
