Outside hydrant leaking

Our outside hydrant has started to leak; even when we shut it off, it continues to dribble fluid.

It kind of looks like this:

How do I fix it?

If it's leaking out of the faucet, shut off the water to the hydrant, and use a pipe wrench and possibly a large crescent wrench to unscrew the red painted head off the pipe. The internal actuating rod and the rubber seal at the bottom can be lifted out of the pipe along with head.

Don't allow the vertical pipe to twist. Use the pipe wrenceh to keep it from moving. After it's out replace the wear parts.

There should be an adjustment nut on the rod connected to the handle that might stop the leak

If that doesn't work, then you'll have to take the head off an replace the internal parts

Most of those had a adj. on the rod travel you could set the handle to push the rod down a tad . Other wise most times you dig em up . The handle hooks to a rod with a rubber plug looking part that when in down sets in a brass seat

Clear as mud

And if what Darren told you to fix doesn`t work you may have to replace the hydrant. Then you will have to dig it up and replace it, not a big deal I have done them by hand. Can be done in a day, dig hole, shut off water, unscrew hydrant, pipe dope on hydrant, put on new hydrant, put gravel around base, replace dirt, all done, eat supper and relax. > Good Luck. Marc

Occasionally, they get a little rock stuck in the seal. I open the faucet up full blast and let it run for a bit, then shut it down. If that doesn't cure the problem, you need to replace the washer.

Also, never force it off. If you do get a little rock in the washer, and you force it off, you can damage the seat and then you have to replace the entire hydrant.
