In the last few days the TV has had ads for a brand new ranger 4WD for $18,900. At what price for the used one is it worth buying the new one?

I would not count on getting it cheap.

Used cars are gold and most auction go-ers seem to have pretty fat wallets.

The last auction car (last fall), I wasted a nice day waiting for a bargain on, was a 97' Ford Taurus, with only 27k miles. It sold for about what KBB retail price would be. Probaly had 15 bidders on it.

Very few bargains at auctions any more, at least around here.

If i get something at a good price, it's usually because nobody else wants it.

You can't say what it is worth without inspecting it, driving it, and listening to the engine.

Has it been in a wreck? Is the frame straight? How many miles does it have on it? 2010 says almost new, but if it has 210,000 miles on it, it is used up.

Has it had good maintenance or is it still driving on the same tank of oil that it had coming off the show room floor.

What is selling around here is anything that is small with decent gas mileage. Vehicles with larger engines, not so much.

All you can do is go and wait and see what it sells for. Set the price you won't go over and hope nobody else wants to pay more.

If I go, I will Carfax it to look for collision damage. Even with attentive detailing, a vehicle with 12,000 miles on it will look different than one with 112,000. And I'll check the title to make sure it's actually an estate vehicle, and not one that belongs to a 21-year-old shirttail relative/hotshot kid who can't make his payments! That doesn't rule out buying it, of course, but it would change the amount I'd be willing to pay.

The two best vehicle bargains of my life came by way of auctions. One was a beautiful 1992 red Cadillac Seville that I picked up in 2002 for $1,250. There was not a THING wrong with! Immaculate inside and out. Bidders were "cold" that day, I guess! I hadn't gone to the sale with the intention of buying a car, but it was just too good of a bargain to pass up! I initially thought I'd resell it for a profit, but after driving it a few times, I fell in loooooove.

I put about 75,000 miles on it (used it as a "Sunday car") until the transmission blew. It still looked good, so I sold it to a guy who could repair it for $400.

Other "best buy" was a VERY beat-up 1986 Ford F150 that came from the estate of an old farmer who was up in his 90s when he died. The odometer said 60,000, but I figured it had been over once (or more) judging from the looks. Dings and dents everywhere! But the motor sounded good, so I gave $850 for it. The heirs to the estate told me afterwards that the miles were original, and Grandpa had hardly left the farm in the last 10 years. Imagine that!

I worked that truck HARD for 3 years (used it to haul round bales, fed my cows right out of the bed of the truck) ... never put more more into it than oil changes and a fuel filter I think. Sold it back to my ex when we split for 1/2 what we'd paid for it. Last I knew, he still was driving it.

So I'm hoping my mojo will work ONE MORE TIME ...

There's also Craig's List for used cars, too. Used cars are usually pretty easy to come by. I'd never drive a new car, they smell nasty.

Marc, since you started playing “spelling police”, with me in another thread, I’ve got to call you on this one. It is spelled bargain.
Let’s call us even.

In Michigan, there are several places that auction vehicles. I check www.1800lastbid.com often. I’m surprised at how high some vehicles sell for.

My dh has a 1995 Toyota Tundra with over 300,000 miles on it.
The thing is a WORK HORSE. Original tranny, no rust, and runs like the day it rolled off the lot.

This is the second Toyota we have owned with over 300,000 miles on it. The first was a 4-Runner!! It had almost 400,000 miles on it when we sold it!!
