Hit a deer insurance question.
Does hitting a deer come under the collision coverage or the comprehensive?
I really dont want to turn in to the insurance company if it will make my rates go up. I understand that comp. won't make it go up.
Am I correct? I have $500 ded. for collision and probably have $800 damage or so.
I'm sure somebody here will know. Thanks

....................Should be covered by comprehensive , they should pay for the repairs minus your deductible . My guess is , "your" insurance agent probably assigned you a 500 deductible on your comp coverage . I carry $50 ded. on comp and will never allow it too go any higher . Get your policy out and it'll clearly tell you what your deductible , Is . , fordy

I'm more concerned that it may raise my rates. I'm pretty sure I have $500 comp. but will fix it myself rather than pay higher rates if turning it in will make them go up.

what state are you in? PA has comp coverage and then it has deer coverage and they are different. We have deer coverage (a type of comp) and we haven't been penalized for hitting deer.

I'm kinda gunshy now , I guess. Several years ago I had my house broken into 2 times in one month. I turned in the claims, got very little money after the deductible and was promptly canceled and had a very difficult time getting insurance.

It's covered on the comprehensive side of your plan. Deer and vehicles have been a thorn in my side here in SE Iowa for a long time. We, as residents of this area put up with deer/car incidents on a constant basis, but more so in the fall because of the rut. The problem I have with this deer/car thing is if I hit a deer with my car or truck or whatever, it becomes my problem, and the state or DNR is found innocent in any court, yet they profess to own all deer within the state. But, if I shoot a deer out of season or without license then DNR says you killed a deer and now you pay with your truck and everything else in that truck.
If you ever come through these parts, especially in the fall. Look out for the bucks and some with huge horns lookin for the females of the their own kind.
How do you explain to an insurance agent from the city why a 300 pound buck hit the side of your car? "The side of your car"? He says"? Why would a deer run into the side of your car? And I reply" Because the boy had one thing on his mind and she was gettin away" He still didn't get it............and he never will. That's about when ya say " I'm country" and this pussified city boy ain't ever gonna get it right. And his poor wife.............

Here in Indiana, with State Farm, when we hit a deer, it went under our comprehensive plan.

I refuse to have anything insured by State Farm. Too many bad experiences with that agency. I go with Farm Bureau. Change your insurance agency.

I used to work in an insurance claims dept...he's the low-down:
If you hit the deer, its covered under comp.
If you swerve to avoid hitting the deer and hit a tree, its collision.
A single comp claim will not affect your rates.
However if you file over a certain # of comp claims during a specified time period, your deductible can be raised without your consent by the insurance co for future claims for a period of time.

Both Alstate and State Farm turn it in as comprehensive. I assume most insurers do. And it shouldn't make your rates go up because comprehensive rates don't make them go up.
