How bad flooding do you have

Interstate 40 is closed down from from about40 miles from Memphis and 30 miles from Little Rock and that is only the tip of the iceberg. The east side of Arkansas is flooded and will be so for at least 5 days. Everything dumps into the Mississippi and at Arkansas City (south part of the state) it is 50 feet and still rising. In 3 cities in Woodruff County have mandatory evacuation orders because the White river is topping the levies. It even goes as far west as Jacksonville 15 miles from Little Rock.

Makes one wonder if the plan was to destroy as much as possible, while promoting the illusion of "saving towns" ? On another forum I saw pictures of Cairo, Ill and it was truly sad, the town appears to be dead, yet they haven't torn down the empty buildings...........

For Arkansas that sounds like a lot of territory, sorry to hear it. How is Poplar Bluff, Mo doing ?

What are you talking about? What plan? I don't think nature plans things like that.

Any where close to the Mississippi will be flooded and will be for some time. The Mississippi will crest at sometimes next week or the week after and then all the rivers that drain in to it can began to flow.

The plan for the Army Corps of Engineers to blow up the levee in Missouri on Monday that has, subsequently, flooded hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland.

Here's a link to a local news story where a levee was intentionally blasted (flooding approximately 133,000 acres of farmland and 100 homes) in order to save Cairo, IL.

I would think that when they do stuff like that (blowing levees), they are compensating the people who's homes and farms they are destroying on purpose? Wouldn't insurance NOT cover flooding damage done on purpose by the government? That wouldn't count as a naturally occuring thing (aka act of god)?

The governor and others are planning to open spillways here in LA starting tonight - that haven't been open in 50 yrs. (depending upon which levees where; spillways have been built since horrible flood of 1927)...Even Baton Rouge may get water and the levees here are mostly 48 ft high. ldc

According to this report, the government will cover farmers who have crop insurance.

Farmers have filed a class action suit against the government.

Quote:
According to BNO News, the farmers have sued the government:

The complaint filed in the United States Court of Federal Claims against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers argued that the property rights of the farmers and landowners under the 5th Amendment to the Constitution were violated when a 15 foot high wall of water was released and flooded their property.

I live in southern Manitoba. Our municipality declared a state of emergency last week -- here's a screenshot of the road closures in the southern half of the province.

How bad flooding do you have - Homesteading Questions

It snowed (heavily) last weekend, and they're calling for rain for this weekend... all weekend. Mine is the ONLY basement in the area that I know of that is *NOT* flooded. We're working today to empty it in case does.

It's difficult getting around -- DH has to take an alternate route to work because the direct routes are all closed at one point or another. He's currently commuting four hours each day, over back roads.

It's a nightmare. Expect grain prices to rise this year, folks, because NO ONE has even begun in their fields yet, and won't be for a while, if at all. Most grain fields around here are under a foot of water.

Most all the land in the eastern part of Arkansas is farm land and raises things like Rice wheat and the likes. We may not get enough time to raise anything on some of the land. Rice should be planted now but a month from now it will not have time to ripen.

I wish for everyone in the affected areas to be safe...especially..near the Mississippi river...head your livestock and belongings to higher ground...I just have a not so good feeling about this.

I know I can't complain, everyone else has it so much worse. But my ducks have been able to swim across my underwater 4' tall fence line : ( Course we are on top of a massive cave system so the water goes down fast. Then it rains again. More of a pain in the neck for me. When you farm or homestead and work a 40 hour week, one lost day means you're a week behind. I'm about a year behind now!

The levee where I grew up is 50 feet above flood stage. I talked to someone from there today, the river is at 49.5 and is expected to crest at 49.7. Needless to say they are just a bit worried.

How bad flooding do you have - Homesteading Questions

This is our driveway on April 27th. Hubby was called in for overtime, but wasn't able to get out via our driveway. He had to drive across the back pasture and around the neighbor's back pasture to access their driveway. We haven't had any flooding since then, but as mentioned in another thread on the Mississippi flooding, we're 45 minutes east of the Mississippi. Our county is in the green area on that map, but we are north of the Coldwater River and won't get any flooding unless the Hickahala Creek backs up. BTW, hubby is down at the road right now replacing the mailbox we lost on the 27th.
