Candling Brown Eggs...

You know, I built a nifty little candler... and I have to tell you...

My brown eggs just don't candle like the ones I see on the internet, etc.

I can see the air sac and a dark mass, but, nothing like the nifty 'here's the eyeball, here's the heart beating" thing.

Guess my chickens just have some thick shells.

Even the white eggs I've never seen eyeballs, etc. With a good light you can see veins, etc. The best way I've found for me is a little 9 LED flashlight with rubber tape to create a little seal. It works pretty good even on my darkest eggs.

Here is what I use;

Ever see those old school overhead projectors? On a white shell you can see the eye spot on them sometimes.

You should still be able to see blood vessels. Make sure you have no other lights bugging you...lol We do it in total darkness. You can possibly make the hole smaller or use a higher wattage bulb. It is best to do it at 3-4 days, If it is about 2 weeks, forget it, too late to see much.

When the chick is about a week into incubation you can see them squirm and jump from the light...lol They look like a tiny shrimp on a rope..

You just reminded me I have eggs to check and 4 are peafowl.

It is fun huh..

Now I would think that would shine through about anything. I had never heard of using something like that. I bet you really have to be quick because of the heat factor though.

LOL I candle our eggs with an old slide projector that we picked up at a thrift store...it shines through most any eggshell .
