Who lives in southern Minnesota?

How about Minnesota as an option? But it would have to be the extreme southern portion. Tell me about there.

Like all places, it pays to be near a bigger city for jobs. Rochester is where I work but
I suppose Austin and Albert Lee have a few jobs. The SE corner is very pretty with
the hills and all. They call it the Driftless Area. The closer to the Mississippi the better.
La Crosse is an option over in that area...I wish we had moved there instead due to the
proximity of the Mississippi river. Good luck!

I live in the central portion of the state and we usually get less snow than the southern part of the state, and far fewer blizzards.

SE around Rochester/ Austin/ Albert Lea is more hills, trees, smaller farms.

SW corner around - uh - Luverne/ Worthington is more sparse, bigger farms, less trees.

SC part is I-90 connecting the other 2 sides, big farms, not much for jobs. Very nice folk and all any which way.Can be a windswept plains in winter.

Not sure what you are looking for, has good and bad like anything else.

why?

What are you looking for? And WHY would you leave GOD's Country (WI)? I am in Monroe County close to " where the I divides" - great farm land, good work at Ft Mccoy or close to LaCrosse, or even Madison. Of course property Taxes are alot more then MN. but atleast our bridges don't fall down? And of course we are home to the Current Superbowl Champs! and the greatest Weather of anywhere in the country (if you love 10 months of SNOW!!!) BUT like myGma would say, this weather keeps the Rif Raf out!

I am just fishing for information. I hate being cold. I hate the long winters here in east central Wisconsin. I dont want to be anywhere the winter is longer, and DH wont move any place where it gets too much warmer. He can't abide the heat.
Its not that I want to leave Wisconsin, Im kind of open. I grew up in Indiana after all. I miss it, but too warm for DH. We are actually going to look at a property in the Richland Center area later on this week.

Maybe the far eastern part is OK, but central to western Southern MN can be brutal in the winter.

I grew up around the Twin Cities, but didn't realize what a real blizzard was until I moved out west a ways. I'm a bit father west than MN, but south western MN has the same type of weather.

The only good thing, we have about a month less of "winter" then we had living in west central WI. Seems it starts a few weeks later and ends a few weeks earlier.

Southestern MN, LaCrosse (WI?), Rochester, Cannon Falls, Brownsville, ect, were not overrun by the last glacier, 10000 years ago. Because of this it's highly eroded with hills and valleys. The glacier didn't smooth things off. Also has pretty rivers, including the Mississippi. Very beautiful area.

The rest of southern MN used to be prairie. It has few lakes and is rolling to flat. It is very good farmland. The price of farmland has gone way up and dragged the price of adjacent rough land along with it. It may be priced too much compared to other areas more suitable to homesteading. There is nothing to stop the wind except the barbed wire fences. Very good for a windmill. It does have terrible blizzards every few years. Sometimes no visibility for days after it quits snowing because the wind blows the snow on the ground sideways.

Wind In Her Hair is right about the lake area starting farther north. Southern MN does have some lakes but most are shallow and have amazing alge blooms in the later summer because of the runoff from the agricultural chemicals. You might want to consider the middle part of the state because you can find some beautiful areas with decent lakes that are not much colder than the Twin Cities.

I've heard from friends that northern KY is priced fairly, is welcoming and the weather isn't as extreme as either the deep south or the far north. They get some snow and some hot days but overall, I'd considerate a moderate location weatherwise.

We lived in Winona, MN. for 5 years about 3 blocks from the Miss. River. It was a lovely town full of great people, but the winters were brutal and the growing season is rather short.

I agree with Tinknal, the winter weather in central and northern Minnesota is much less severe than in southern MN and Iowa. In fact, I believe we had less "snow days" in our part of MN than they had in Texas this past winter.

Also, central and northern MN does not get the wind - due to our forests - like they get on the prairie and open farmland areas.

Hey, CF, we got about 3 inches of freshly fallen "Minnesota Spring" this morning, how about you?
