propane oven sooty??

So, about 1 month ago, I had a man install a new electronic ignitor as it was bad. Now, the oven heats up and bakes fine, except there is a slight propane smell and a fine black soot covers the racks and the glass oven door during cooking. The stove is about 4-5 years old. Gas company here in January to "convert properly" from natural gas to propane, as they say it wasn't done when it was installed (by stbx). Any advice, guidelines?? The propane company charges $98 an hour and now that is something I can't afford right now. There is a self-cleaning feature I have never used. Is there an adjustment or should I call the gas company?? Thanks in advance

You get soot from not enough air. Is there something blocking the air inlet?

HMMM..what to look for?? There is a tube thing that has holes on both sides in the middle of the oven where the flames come out of. I have used a toothpick and "cleaned" these holes as the guys showed me. Before they did the adjustment, the flames came out way too high and around the sides of the racks. Any thing else to look for specifically?

BTDT. I had the propane oven adventure for what seemed like years.... Check the archives for my story -- it was an ongoing saga, and a constant fight with the propane company that I bought the stove from. Flames were either so high they were shooting up the sides of the oven (fire hazard) or you had the propane smell. Both ways, lots of soot, and the enamel finish burnt off the inside of the chamber.

It's probably the regulator, but good luck finding anyone who can fix it properly. I ended up replacing the entire stove after my ELEVENTH service call on the unit.

Just for kicks and giggles, can I enquire -- it isn't, perchance, a Premier brand stove, is it?

It's a Tappan made by the Electrolux company.

I don't know what the solution is, but the soot indicates incomplete combustion, which also produces carbon monoxide. Please, be sure that you have a working carbon monoxide detector in your home.

Cheri, I'm having the same problem with a GE stove, which Hubby did the conversion on from natural gas to propane. Tried to adjust the air thing and THINKS it's all the way down, but now I have yellow flames coming up the holes in the oven floor and the smell of propane, as well as soot on the vent in back! Same problem, I'm interested to see what the solution is. Jan in Co

There is an adjustment that gets done when converting to propane. You take the bottom drawer out and all the way in the back theres a nut on the supply tube that you turn. I did mine by the manual but it still sooted and flames came out the bottom so I had to adjust it some more. You need your manual to see which way to turn it.

your propane to air mixture is running rich. dust bunnies, moths, the stray mouse even can clog the air intake and throw the mixture out of whack. make sure you have a clean blue flame when you are finished cleaning and adjusting. We got our oven burner "cleaned" pretty good yesterday. My Yvonne and her mother were putzing around in my kitchen and Yvonne lit the oven... or thought she did... after a couple minutes they noticed a gas smell and checked... no flame so she lit it again!!!! Whooooofff! the windows rattled all over the house!!!! I checked things out for them... no harm done but DML wont go near the oven anymore
