Pressure gauge testing around the Bird In Hand area of Lancaster

Do you know of a place to get my pressure gauge for my pressure canner checked in the Bird In Hand area of Lancaster PA? I checked the coopertive extension in the area and it is a half hour drive from bird in hand, and that is a little too far for me.

Also, can you check a pressure gauge at a plumbing store, or have a plumber check it?

Thanks for the help.

A half hour drive isn't really that far to have it checked out for your safety. I have mine checked every coupe of years. Peace of Mind is worth the trip.

I don't think plumbers can test it, it takes special equipment and knowing how to use and read it.

However, if you have a Presto canner, you can replace the gauge with a weight set and never have to worry about having it calibrated again. Here's a link on the subject: Have a Presto canner? Buy this part for it.

If yours isn't a Presto canner, ask on the Preserving the Harvest boards, and maybe someone can help you, but I'm thinking your county extension office is your only option, other than buying a new canner. Good luck!

Me too Crispin! It takes me 45 minutes to an hour just to get to the shops or doctor's office, lol.

However, strangely enough, our county extension office (and the county fairgrounds) is just eight miles from my house. I had them calibrate a canner I bought at a yard sale several years ago, and they gave me a bunch of free handouts and instructions too. I've called and e-mailed them several times to ask questions about gardening and livestock too, they're very helpful!

CB, I don't know if you've already checked this out, but here's an interactive map listing the offices. Maybe there is one closer, but I'm not familiar enough with the area to tell. http://extension.psu.edu/counties
