I have beef fat. Now what?

I was recently given some frozen beef fat, a few pounds worth, so not a large amount. I've rendered pork fat into lard before, but never had access to beef fat.

So, now what do I do with it? I'm assuming to make it into tallow (say, to try soapmaking) that I need to render it first, correct? Would a few pounds of raw fat be enough to do anything with other than make suet for birds (which I'm not really interested in; the birds here seem to do just fine without me feeding them ).

Any firsthand experience out there? Suggestions would be much appreciated.

A while back I did a blog post with pictures about rendering tallow. Here's the link if you're interested:

I use it in cooking every day. I scramble eggs with it and add it to green beans often. It's the primary fat I use in cooking.

A few pounds would make some of the best french fries you can make at home!

Tallow also makes a whiter, cleaner soap than lard.

I was getting ready to say McDonalds use to have the best FF around till they had to quit using beef fat in their frying oil.

If you do any homecanning of venison meat you could save it for that. After loading my jars with venison I would put a big hunk of beef fat on top of the cubed venison to kind of give it a beefy taste during the canning process.
