People uniting against a bussiness in Woodbury TN

I went to a meeting in Woodbury that was to organize against a rock Quarry at the edge of town. The quarry in maybe three years old and the people did not break any laws when they bought the land, got the permits and started their operation. Now people want it shut down because they don't like how it looks and they are destroying the neighborhood.
I made clear that if I was voting where a quarry was going to be located it would not be there.
But with that said one it will cost me 70 dollars a truck load more for gravel if they move and that is going to cost you in lumber that I cut.
They have employees and our community is at about 17 percent real unemployed.
If you don't like them there get together and buy the land.
The general consensus is we have to pass more laws and take individual rights away.

We had a similar fight around here. You would not believe the excuses trotted out to prevent the quarry, which was not near any residential area. I fear for our country. I've seen how such anti-business attitudes have made Vermont a land of the ultra-rich and peons scrabbling for enough money to pay for food an heating bills. The state looks like a storybook, but the stories of many residents are horror stories.

I'm sure glad that quarry isn't doing anything useful like providing JOBS, which IMHO would really increase their appeal

Perhaps the good people that are working at this quarry would like to be out of work? Or perhaps those who want to close the quarry would like to pool their financial resources to compensate those they want to lose their jobs--in other words replace their paychecks in exchange for their asthetic concerns?

Oh, I very very seriously doubt they'd want to come off with some money for those they want to lose their jobs..

If those whose sensibilities are offended by this quarry don't like it, THEY need to go elsewhere, don't they?

From a small farmers' (with neighbors who'd like nothing more than see me move because I'm "ruining their country living experience") perspective I wouldn't bother someone else's business. It's providing valuable services and jobs. Sure it might not be pretty but animal manure isn't either. That's just part of what it takes to run business and it isn't really hurting anyone.

It's pretty sad when a business that has been in operation for a while is being run out of town because people have decided they don't like the way it looks.
You put a gravel quarry where a gravel deposit exists. You can't put one just where it's convenient for the people (who will probably change their minds again in a couple years).
And yes, I am familiar with gravel quarry dust and noise.

Why not get the gravel from China? That way there won't be a mess.
How many people are making a living from that quarry?

Just_Sawing - I pass that quarry every day on my way to and from work. It's on the outside of town and not exactly in a neighborhood. To me main street shops etc.... don't seem to start until you pass the police department (heading towards McMinnville).

BTW, we're needing to order crusher run for our driveway, and I'd just assume get it from someone close. Who do you call to order from them?

I checked the quarry on google maps and if its one near Cannon Creek Art Center then I would say its well out of town. Has the quarry caused any dust or noise problems for the people in town?

No joke - when I was in Florida, which is NOTHING but coral and sand, I wanted some granite. Went to the Home Despot, bought a bag of granite chips and guess where they were from? Yep. Shipped halfway around the world when there were quarries in GA.

I'm guessing this is the issue and why the people are upset.

Sounds questionable to me.
An experienced demo man can shoot
rocks for years and not have any airborne.
Just some dust. Not a lot of dust.

Similar deal happened around here. Once upon a time, there was a small drag strip on the outskirts of town. Had "run what you brung" nights for the high school kids (well back when they cared about the engine and not just how much frickin BASS) and was all around an asset to the area. The years go by, somebody sells off some land near the track, it gets developed into upper class homes. Guess what, the homeowners petition the county to shut down the race track because of noise. And they got it done, even though the racetrack was there first. NEVER underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Vulcan materials has a a large quarry they bought from Southern ready mix. THeres ouse across the road that are picketting it. THey have large signs saying that these houses were destroyed by Vulcan , Bulcan and TIm Mcveigh usesd the same bombs to destroy buildings, If Vulcans a good neighbor we dont need vulcan.

VUlcan provides all the lime for that county, most of the stone i nthe area. and Lots of good paying jobs. I worked near them and know the layout of the plant. THe older houses that are supposedly falling apart from the siesmic disturbance of the blasting are all ppretty old. I looked at one and it was a Termite den. WHen I worked in the area the houses that are newer ar righ beside it near the property line with out any problems. monito It was located near Colbert steam plant and they monitorfor seismic activity and we did to. THey the quarry is well within limits making les ground vibration than the nearest train tracks that run between the houses and road and quarry.

Its a mess I hope the Quarry in Woodbury makes it. I find it hard to believ that a powder man would rock a house
