Really disappointed in people

I have been in touch with a nubian goat breeder in our area. Went to visit her and her goats in Feb, she promised to call when she decided what to sell (after some kids were born.) I called back 6 or 7 times since. She always had bad news about her goats. Called yesterday, well she had one doe for sale, who kidded a few days ago and was ready to milk. I could come see her right then. I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up...when i got there I helped a young man load up the doe he was buying. Then the lady tells me her "grand daughter won't let her sell the goat" she just promised me over the phone! I spent an hour driving there, waited for her to finish up with the other guy, and had an hour drive home : ( I wish people wouldn't waste my time like that. It was the only day I had off and I needed to be working in my garden. Shes a much older lady and I had to explain to her every time I called what my name was and why I was calling. I don't think she remembered who I was, maybe she didn't remember talking to me over the phone three hours earlier? And the goat I helped load was not the same one I went to buy. I met her goats weeks back and remembered all thier names and colors, ages etc, in case she called. Just so disappointing. I'll keep trying though. There's got to be some goat breeders in KY willing to sell animals.

I feel for ya'. A few weeks ago I drove two hours, and spent $80 in gas to go look at a tractor. I had talked to the guy three times about it, and when I got there he had lied about everything. Steers hard ended up meaning it wouldn't turn at all. Minor leaks in a few places meant that it it had been powerwashed, and when started puked oil from everywhere. Serviced every year meant that it was never greased due to the fact that all the bushings were blow out. It went down hill from there with the lies. I just wish people would be honest, but it is becoming more and more rare.

That's so disappointing and I feel your pain. We've had nothing but "screwovers" the past few months. I think people are just out for themselves these days and it's only getting worse and worse.

TRAILRIDER have you asked over in the goat forum for anyone near you that may have goats for sale? I can't think right now who may be in Kentucky but with kidding season going on all over now with most everyone's goats there has to be some nice one's not to far from you.

What about calling your cooperative extension for goat breeders in your area, a local 4-H club that might know different folks, also your county fairs & local feed stores are always good places to check also.

Sorry you wasted a whole day driving to pick up what you thought may be your new doe, that is very dissappointing. I too do not respect people that do that kind of thing but like you said maybe she dosn't rmember if she is really that old.

I'm in KY as well and have been thinking about Nubians myself ... not does to milk but a couple of wethers for weed control at least ... and do definitely want Nubians. I've been looking off and on (on the Internet) and actually have not found any Nubian breeders in KY. I'm sure there are some, just don't know where, or how ... to look.

I have a similar problem with people, but on the other side of the transaction. Whenever I list things for sale on craigslist/KSL, I always have people who really really want an item, schedule a time to come and see it....then don't show up So I've rushed home from work, maybe skipped or delayed my physical therapy appt for the day, and end up doing it for nothing. No notification that they need to reschedule or are running late, etc. That's why I hate selling things!!

SFM and Trailrider.

Try posting a "wanted nubian Goats" ad in Craigslist or any other free ad paper.

That how I found my Katahdins and many other odd items - cheap - just by asking.

Often people don't know they have something for sale, until someone wants to buy it.

Be prepared for a few flakes, also.

I've have run into this, but now greatly reduce the non-sense, by getting their cell phone number and keeping in regular contact with them, almost hounding, but hey you have to do what works.

I'll do like "call me if you are coming today" "call me when you are 30 minutes away". If they are truely interested, they usually won't mind keeping in touch, because it's in their benefit also.

Try it, it does work and will help weed out the flakes.

Your time is just as valuable as their's

There's a Charleston WV area Saanen breeder, Marilyn Grossman who is extremely reliable. She's been an officer with ADGA in years past, and has beautiful animals. If that's not too far to begin with (a good 30 minutes the other side of Ashland) ( I promise she raises show quality animals, and is very professional). Look up Kickadeehill.com and have a drool towel ready! These won't be scrub priced as they are animals that come from 28 years of work. I sent a friend there for a packgoat wether to do Search and Rescue work with in the Mountains of WV... a few yrs ago and she loves that big boy!

www.kickadeehill.com *( check out the working wethers page...so cool! My saanen wether loves to work-he takes it very seriously!)

If those goats are too pricey...ask her for recommended folks closer to you? Also if you are not too far...fiascofarm.com LaMancha goats are in middle TN I believe...

Trailrider, this is said very gently. If the woman couldn't remember talking to you 3 hours later and could never remember who you are, then you were unrealistic to expect her to remember that you were coming to pick up a goat, or to remember that she told you she'd sell you one.

All you can do is to move on. Try a wanted-to-buy ad on Craigslist, or contact the National club for that breed and ask for their list of members in your area.

Here's the ad I've got on cragislist. No answers though : ( But there are a bunch of people looking for goats on there.
Also no answers to the ads I've put in the feed stores. I've been to goatfinder.com, but no luck, and I have joined the ADGA and the KGPA (KY Goat Producers.)
You'd think I was looking for a solid platinum goat that poops gold nuggets! : )

I had an interesting conversation with a boer goat breeder today at work (she has no babies yet). She says that at the most recent KGPA meeting they were saying that there have been numerous problems with this years crop. Lots of kidding problems, difficult births, dead babies. Also dead calves born in the area? Interesting.

i completely understand. We found a good dela onn CL last week on a camper ( we were going to buy it for a 2nd camper for visitors) it was a pop up but only $200. The pics looked good and my husband said he was going to buy it. called the guy talked to him on the phone set up a time to go get it that evening. Guy said call before you get here so I can meet you at cause it was parked on his inlaws property. My husband headed his way and got to the town he lived in and was to call him so he did. Well, the guy said- i just sold it the guy pulled away 15 min. ago. My husbnd was ticked cause he paid his buddy to take him casue our truck ws in the shop getting a transmission.

Also, watch buying aniomals on craigslist, because alot of people try to pass off their sick animals sometimes. We got took a few years back on some rabbits. It was our first time with rabbits other than pets so we didnt really know what to look for.

sometimes it is better to keep expectations low, and then you'll be surprised when someone comes out better..

Get used to it. As the old woman said "People turn on you, they let you down, and in the end you die in your own arms" ....such is life.

You might also check for Yahoo! Groups for specific breeds and areas, and don't forget Facebook as well.
