Smells like a goat-homemade laundry soap
I made my first batch a few days ago and this is the first load of bath towels I've done with it. I just did the basic recipe, Borax, A & H Washing Soda and grated Dr Bronner's peppermint soap. Just got out of the shower and my fresh-from-the-dryer towels smell like my goats.  I don't use my bath towels on my goats.
What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure, but it might be the peppermint soap. I use Fels Naptha or Zote and I get just a nice clean smell. There might be a chemical reaction between the borax or soda and the soap. Can't think of any other reason.

How long is it taking to get the towels from the washer to the dryer? I make my own laundry soap too, while i don't have goats, if i leave the laundry in the washer for too long it will have a weird smell even after going through the dryer.
I don't recommend doing a load of laundry before going to bed and thinking you'll be able to dry them in the morning, more often then not letting it linger in the washer will result in an "off" weird smell.
However if your moving the towels from the washer to the drier pretty quickly i don't know what it could be.

I just made some today and used Fels Naptha. Clothes smell gooood. Sorry you are having trouble. Try again but use a different bar soap. Good luck

We use homemade laundry soap a lot and I've never noticed any weird smelling laundry (at least AFTER it's washed anyway) We use grated Fel's Naphtha soap,Borax and A&H washing powder and it gives everything a nice clean smell.
This recipe takes the smoke smell out of my work uniforms better than any of the store bought detergents.

I think the goats are coming in the house and using the towels w/o you seeing them. They're sneaky.

Hummmmmm......I haven't had a "dryer" in about 20 years so I don't know if that could be part of the problem or not but I remember about 35 years ago when I lived in Florida a RAT got in my dryer and died and that caused a "unique" smell before we figured out what it was! My "solar" dryer leaves everything smelling fresh!  Oh and the rat was in the BACK of the dryer!

Are you KIDDING??? (Sorry, too good a pun to pass up...) Put your soap on ETSY with a $10 per bar price tag on it. I'm serious. You have one of the best new gag gifts and man gifts that I can imagine. You have a money-maker there. I can think of a number of ways to market it - Got a boss you don't like?..., want a he-man scent?, want the REAL smell of country?...
If I had money, I might even buy a bar.

I've spent the past 6 days nursing a goat that got into the neighbor's azaleas. I might just have so much goat poop/vomit/fur/medication up my nose I can't smell anything else! If she survives she can sleep on my bath towels every night for the rest of her natural life.

Maybe its the towels, not the soap. I had a brand new set, that from the get-go smelled bad no matter how they were washed. The other towels in the same washer load didn't smell that way.

I'm familiar with that! I didn't think it smelled like a goat but I'm not around them every day. Instead, I thought it smelled "gamey".
The funny thing is other people didn't seem to notice the smell like I did. It was just intolerable in my opinion.
I replaced the Dr.Bronner's with the Fels and I have that smell no more.
It is some kind of chemical reaction in the drier I think. The delicates that I line dried in a room didn't get that smell but everything that went into the drier did.
LOL...I thought it was just me! Glad to know someone else had the problem and I'm not crazy.

I had a sweater once that came out of its first wash smelling like fish. I re-washed, aired it in the sun, washed again, aired in the sun, etc. Never did smell right. Could it be the towels??

I use Fels Naptha, so that is different.
However, the laundry soap directions say to use 1/2 Cup of soap per load. If I use 1/2 Cup on the dog's bedding, it still smells vaguely of dog. So I upped the soap to 1 full cup per load. Clothes are spotlessly clean. Even old stains have come out, and there is virtually no smell to the clothes at all. I prefer the no smell, because I am allergic to perfumes, but I understand it is possible to add scent to the home made laundry soap.
At 1 full cup per load, it is still just pennies to do a load. 2 full gallons of laundry soap cost me about $1 to make.
I could probably try 3/4 C of soap and see if that does the job. I am using a big frontloader and maybe that makes a difference in how much soap is needed.

I think I'll switch to Fels Naptha after this batch. I do use a full cup of Borax and washing soda to a cup for soap but it must be the peppermint (which I love) mixing with the other ingredients causing the goaty-gamey smell Christy and I seem to be super sensitive to!
I have to admit, I love that I did about 8 loads of laundry and not one peice had those odd grease spots on them that appear when I wash with commercial detergent. It makes me so mad to pull what are supposed to be clean clothes out of the wash only to find these new spots on them from the detergent. Glad to be rid of those!
