Need help with Farmall A

Hello I have an Old Farmall A IH. My tractor is one I use mostly in the garden and a small bushog. I have noticed that I have 2 cracks showing on each front axle and I need to know if the old welds will have to cut away or what are my options? I just took the starter off and hope to get it rebuilt at the local alternator shop to try and rebuild it. Farmall Tractor parts are expensive but I have a need not to try and buy a new one as my credit score the way it is I am lucky to get pizza delivered to my house so I have to patch everything best as I can.

Any good sites on electric fence designs or thoughts on how i can run the best electric fence around my small garden. Thanks...

Are the cracks in steel or cast iron? Most can be ground out to leave a V and then welded up. Special rod to weld cast iron and may need preheated first. Find a good welder that has experience to do it right. What are you trying to keep out of your garden. A woven or welded wire netting and electric fence to help keep animals from jumping over or rubbing on the regular fence is best. The problem is when the electric isn't working, unless you have pretty solid fence animals can walk right through. I have a chain link garden fence, 6' tall and hot wire above and at the bottom. My garden and my goats are my life....James

If the cracks are in the welds, there should be no reason a competent machine shop cant grind them out and re-weld them. If you can do the work yourself, so much the better. I've got three old farmalls myself and you aren't kidding about the price of parts through the dealer. It's surprising how many parts they can still get their hands on. If you're trying to keep your "A" together as your primary tractor, I would be checking out those fencerows for a donor tractor that you could probably pick up for the price of scrap. Good luck!
