Cottage Food Law passed in Arkansas!

Cottage Food Law passed in Arkansas!

When farmers markets begin opening across the state in the coming months, some homemade food items will be able to be sold legally for the first time.

Until now, the state’s Department of Health restricted farmers markets from selling so called value added items, such as baked goods, candy, fruit butter, jams and jellies, to only those foods prepared in a permitted kitchen.

The change comes with the passage of the “cottage food” law, which the governor signed Feb. 18, that exempts those homemade products from Health Department oversight.

There is something like that happening in Oregon right now. Some foods can be prepared (and labeled) in an unlicensed kitchen. But all I've heard is jams and pickles. Nothing about baked goods. I haven't been able to find any additional information about it.

Hopefully, the Texas Bakers Bill,( Texas Cottage law) will make it thru this year. Fingers crossed.

Congrats! They did the same in Virginia a few years ago and it made a huge difference in boosting sales.

What a terrific idea! Any idea what might be typical exemptions? (Like raw dairy?)

Texasdirtdigger, I have not heard of this. Please post any info on this that you come across. If it passes, I will fill the mixing bowls and heat the oven. Wonderful news for Texans!

Meth would probably sell the best, but I don't think it falls in the "cottage food" category!

Funny, but unfortunately probably very true. (does that still make it funny then? Hmmm.)

That IS good news....I hadn't heard of this bill before, but when I saw the title, I thought it was more legislation against homemade food.
