New here

Hi,

I have been a lurker for several years, and finally had to register so that I could ask a few questions. We live on dryland wheat/cattle operation in western Nebraska, and also have a hobby sized enterprise close to the house here, Flower Field Farm. We are going to start milking jersey cows and selling raw milk off the farm as well as make cheese. We have hereford hogs, tunis sheep, laying hens, a collie dog and 4 kids ages 5,4,2, and 9 months. Here is a link to the blog we just started.

I'm never too old to learn. I have never heard of a Hereford hog before. My, the photos of them sure show them as attractive. Easy enough to see where they get the name of breed.

Western Kansas transplant here, now in south central. I welcome you to the forums.

Are you a fan of the Ralph Moody series of books which start with Little Britches? On the Dry Divide and Horse of a Different Color are biographical about Moody and are of his time near Oberlin, Atwood, Cedar Bluffs, etc. which are nearly on the KS/NE line.

Enjoy the forums.

Welcome!

I'm currently down in the SW corner, by KS and CO. But I went to college up in Chadron, student taught at Bayard, and spent my first few married years on a couple of ranches in the pandhandle.
We still have good friends who live in your area...

Thanks

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I must admit that I picked the hereford hogs first based on appearance... but they have been better than expected. In our last cold spell of -20 the pink pigs barely made it through, and these guys thrived. Their hair is much longer and thicker, and their personalities are the best!

ErinP what a small world. We have some connections in the Bayard area, we are between Scottsbluff and Kimball. We occasionally haul sunflowers to Goodland, KS... is that near you?

Welcome. You're lucky your state allows the sale of raw milk.

Welcome from central Nebraska. How did your wheat look before the snow? Around me very poor stands due to lack of fall moisture.

Poor here too. FIL has been talking about tearing it up and planting to oats if it doesn't improve soon. I'm estimating that we have about 700 acres drilled right now, so I hope it snaps out of it!

Yes we are lukcy that NE allows raw milk sales, but dealing with the inspectors concerning the cheese is another thing. Even though the law clearly states the sales are legal, they try VERY hard to make you feel as though you are breaking the law.

Yep, just south of us. We're right on the state line.
