Which forum?
This site is... huge. There is a wealth of information here but I am a little lost. Do we talk about and ask info about butchering in the pertinent animal forum or is there a specific place to do so?
Thanks so much.

I would put a general question on butchering (if you can think of one?) right here and a specific question under specific livestock forum.

Oh, I can think of plenty of questions... I am actually trying to find some way I can get hands on experience under the wing of a competent mentor. I want to build up confidence that just doesn't come from books. My animals are very important to me and that I am able to 'handle' them cleanly and competently and make sure there is as little waste as possible during my learning process.

I'd start a new thread right here. For anything general - it's here. Specific - in animal forum...but that's just a general idea anyway. Put it where you think it goes best.

Yes, this place is pretty big, which is what I keep telling myself when I look up at the time and say "but I've only caught up on 3 of the boards and it's been 4 hours already?!?"
If it's a general butchering question, such as "What do I need to butcher at home?", that would go here in General Homesteading. A question such as "how long do I bleed out chickens?" would probably go better on poultry, but it wouldn't be out of place here, either.
we all gotta eat!

My take is that you should probably go to the appropriate animal forum for specific advice on a specific species. You will get more hits on this subforum (homesteading questions) and it IS a good place to ask. But the animal specific forums are sometimes the ONLY place that some folks go to.
That said...the animal specific forums can often get into personality fights. Don't let it put you off. EVERYONE has an opinion. Only sometimes do the opinions agree

My general rule is:
Outside questions go here (mechanics, building, planting, critters).
Inside questions go to Country Families (kids, housekeeping, cooking, etc.)
Horse conversations I almost always take to Equine and sewing always goes to Sewing & Quilting, but beyond those two I tend to forget the other forums are down there.

you can ask anything on the homesteading question site and pretty much do anything else on the countryside families site..but the individual subject forums are good for what they are good for

Oh wow, thanks Alice. That is an incredible post. I guess if all goes as I have planned, this year I will find out if I deserve to be a meat eater or not.

Welcome, CraterCove!
Goats are not difficult to butcher. The hardest part is, you might become very, very attached to them, and put off butchering them because of it! I love my goats, they're friendly and affectionate, and very playful -- and they taste mighty fine in a good curry, too!

Oh yes, the thing that stands between me and my wonderful vindaloo is my affection towards my goats. But goat is mighty tasty and I have my own human kids to consider.
My husband doesn't understand this, but I feel real love for my animals, even those who will eventually end up on my table. To him he sees that one separates one- self from their food. To me, I want to be closest to my food. I want it to feel nothing but love an affection... because it serves the most noble of purposes... sustenance for my children.
