New Forum Sugestion

I would like to ask adimin and mods. to think about adding a new forum here. I would like to see one on ALTERNATIVE BUILDING. Many homesteaders are looking for ways to build cheaper strong and more green then the standard stick framed home. It is one of the few thing directly related to homesteading that is not on here.

It is a great idea except that most states have adopted uniform building codes that are not friendly towards alternative methods. Don't plan to use straw bale construction here in Pennsylvania !

Part of such a forum could be how to find out local building codes and ideas on how to change them.
It'd be great!

I completely agree, we have an alt energy forum, why not alt building!

We are looking at building a new hired man's house and need other than traditional stick built!

There are few local building codes concerning residential construction ... most are now State adopted codes thanks to our communistic legislatures.

Gone are the days when a man could buy land and use indigenous materials to build shelter. And for trying you may end up in jail !!!

OMG... wow everyday I am exposed to more ways in which our government has grown too big for it's britches. Having any code that is not local in this regard is just against how I see this country as being set up from the beginning.

The states have mostly adopted a uniform code which originates from something called the international building codes.

Look at this link concerning Pennsylvania

I would think that alt building could be included in alt energy as they are very closely related in my opinion. maybe as a sub section?

I think there is some alternative construction posting recently in the real estate forum ..... which is not the best place for it so the OP needs to be addressed for sure! Sub forum of alternative energy would work ... if HT wants to avoid another forum.

I don't mind Real Estate construction in the Real Estate forum.
The rules and state/local regulations would fit the topic of Real Estate.
Probably best for housing of various types.

I do not know if Chuck (site owner/head admin) will add another forum since HT has so many and Real Estate is the closest to home construction, and there have been posts about houses and building rules there a bit.
Buying land, etc.

And it's something I'm interested in myself. But, I'm not a builder (yet.)

I've often had building questions and wondered why there wasn't an area devoted to "building" whether it was home, shop, barn or out building. regardless of method of building. with me just being a visitor here though then I have always posted those questions where I thought that they best fit.

Angie as far as putting them in the real estate area I have no trouble with that. I would just have to remember to check there more often. it hurts my feeling to go there and see all these nice places for sale knowing I can't purchase them.
