HELP! Tearing my hair out over the electric fence!
I went out today an bought the Parmak SE4.
I hooked it up and it's reading nothing. When I detach the wires (fence and grounding) I get a 14.9 reading on the machine, but as soon as I attach the wires again...nothing.
So, we have a grounding problem? but I can't figure out where or why. We have 3 6' rods in the ground.
The problem could also be where the wires pass under the 2 gates, but with the ground frozen rock hard, I can't access anything in the ground.
HELP! I have 3 horses to contain and I'm at my wit's end.

Not a grounding problem as often referred to as an inadequate ground. You have a dead short. Leave the ground connected to the charger. The hot wire is making contact with something else, either a ground wire, metal post, or directly to earth. When you find where the hot lead is making contact to earth/ground you will be able to make the repair. You may need to sever the hot wire where it goes underground and you should have an output from the charger. If so, go above ground with some jumper wires that are insulated from the soil until the weather conditions improve.
PS....I would think that if the short is not buried below the surface you should hear the spark as it pops.

Ok, it seems to be fixed, and I feel like an idiot.
The wire from the box to the top line was pulled too tight and it was touching the metal charger box.
I fiddled with it for an hour and a half....when hubby got to it, it took him about 40 seconds

Glad you found it. Been around electric fencer for all my life, and there are days - oh well let's just say it's not unusual to spend 2 hours fixing a 2 minute problem.

Right. I'm glad hubby found it. It's reading 16.2 now.
I'm good with feet, but not so good with some other practicalities!

My neighbor got sick of his cows getting out due to charger problems-all his cows went to the auction. Monday 4 of ours went(getout cows, -what we call em). It gets ridiculous, and I'm sick of coming on here asking for help looking like an Idiot. The fence is officially no longer my concern.
